I bought a 1980's SBG2000 in a pawn shop around 1994 while shopping for a 357 magnum revolver. That is the neck-through-the-body version of the SBG1000. Mine plays as great as my 1970 Gibson LP Custom and has a little more comfortably shaped body. Its craftsmanship is superb, noticeably superior to that of my Gibson. (Don't get me wrong - I never intend to part ways with either guitar!) The only reason I don't give my Yamaha 5 stars overall is that my pickups sound a little thin and weak in single coil mode, but as humbuckers they sound great, very PAF-like. For a better single coil sound, I might try putting a DiMarzio Dual Sound in the bridge someday, or maybe a Rockfield SWC. Anyway, if you're shopping for a new Gibson LP, I would recommend this SBG1000 - more bang for your buck, with craftsmanship on par with Gibson's Custom Shop.

The Yamaha SG series is the finest solid body guitar I've ever played. I've been a huge fan for years. I Used to own Les Pauls and the like then I played the SG (or SBG)—there was no going back. Amazing quality and craftsmanship; the perfect neck (for me—it's subjective) and a versatility in range of sounds that is sadly lacking in "comparable" models. Go from deep thick humbucking sounds to twangy single coils with a push/push splitter.—great if you have sweaty gig hands. The SBG 1000 is lighter than it's more expensive stablemate (SBG200) as it doesn't have the neck through and brass block if I'm correct. Go play one, you'll be amazed.

Best guitar i've ever had!

I bought a brand new SG1000 two years ago, and i must say i've never had a better guitar. I have several Gibsons and Fenders, but compared to them this guitar is MUCH better when it comes to build quality and sound. It weighs more than a Les Paul Custom, but if you can't handle the weight, you are no rocker! :-) The push-push knobs turns this guitar from a rock-beast to a twang-beast. Nice singlecoil-tones as well. I can't find any finish flaws etc. and it stays in tune all the time(something a Les Paul doesn't always do). At this price it's easy to fall for a Gibson or a Fender, but i dare people to compare the quality of those guitars with this one(or other Japanese guitars). By the way i just bought a brand new Gibson RD Standard, also a great guitar but not comparable...)If you wonder why i bought a Gibson guitar after reading my review, it's just because the RD Standard looks cool. :-) Anyhoo! I recommend the Yamaha SG1000 to all of you that are looking for a allround guitar with top notch quality! You won't regret it, i promise you that.
