I bought this guitar from my cousin, and I love it. It has great tone, full, rich sound, and just amazing. I've played on Fenders, Gibsons, and this matches all of them. I would buy this guitar anytime again. I have the natural finish. It's Beautiful! It came with medium strings, but I put light on. That's just my personal comfort. Overall, this guitar is awesome, and a great price!

Great entry-level, or even as a working backup.

I've played guitars for 20 years and I've owned a LOT of guitars. I've occasionally recorded and performed with this guitar for its overall quality, versatility, and reliability. I'll always keep one around on account of these qualities. Quality, tone, and setup for the price are unbeatable. I think it's the best entry-level guitar on the market. If your child wants to learn and you're afraid of breaking the bank then this is the best way to offer a great instrument with little risk. It's also good for an experienced guitarist as a reliable and inexpensive backup. A good guitar to travel with if you don't want to lose or damage a more expensive guitar but want a good sound and playability in its place. Tuning and intonation all but ignore climate change. It stays in tune for weeks in or out of the case. Factory set-up was pretty darned good as with all Yamahas but I tweaked it a bit because I like to play around with such things.
I find that the FG700s is better (pretty good, even) for vocal accompaniment and chord playing but poor for playing leads because the sustain is noticeably lacking when playing individual notes and doing heavy bends in the treble strings. I use phosphor bronze strings and occasioanlly switch to 80/20s for more volume/punch and less depth. I switched the plastic bridge pegs for Tusq to see if this would improve sustain in the treble registers. This increased volume, clarity and sustain of the middle and bass strings but did little for the treble strings. The Tusq is actually a little thin for the holes in the bridge! I like to tinker so eventually I'll replace the saddle and nut with Tusq or bone. It might help if ALL contact points and not just the pegs were or higher grade material. In the meantime I just evenly shaved down the plastic bridge a smidge to lower the string height to my preferred level.
The nato has a very attractive beeswing figure in the straight grain. The top on mine even has a little figure along the bookmatch which is nice. The finish is polyurethane all over, which I think is responsible for stealing some of that resonance and projection, but this same finish also makes it more stable in more drastic temperature or humidity changes. The sticky polyU is also a little noisy if you're recording and wearing a pair of jeans and resting the guitar on your knee.

After spending a good bit of time trying out quite a few dreads at the exceptional local retailers, and Guitar Center, I narrowed my search down to the Yamaha brand. I needed to spend as little as possible, but I certainly wasn't going to settle for cruddy tone. Yamaha amazed me with the tone they produced from such reasonably priced guitars. I was even very impressed with the lower priced laminate top F335 model, but it's awesome that you get a solid top and nice satin "feel" neck on the FG700S. Both of these retain the same clarity even way up the neck. I bought mine back in February and have since tried out guitars costing 3-5X as much (out of curiousity, I'm still very satisfied with my FG) and still find the FG's tone to be very close to or better than some. Since this guitar is not only for people looking for great tone but also for something economical, I recomend adjusting the saddle height by yourself. The saddle is removed with no problem. Just lay some medium to fine wetsand paper on a perfectly flat surface and start rubbing away constantly gauging your progress making sure to keep the saddle perpedicular to the surface (standing staight up) with the goal being to retain the perfect flattness on the saddle bottom. It's really a pretty easy process, just don't get too anxious, do a little at a time then reinstall and repeat.
