Reviewers have consistently praised the AES1500 as an extraordinary archtop bargain. The combination of a mellow sycamore top with the bright-sounding maple back and sides gives it the depth and complexity of the finest vintage models. Multidimensional DiMarzio Q100 pickups bring out this complexity to the fullest. Plus, 2-way tone controls let you split either or both pickups to get many bright, punchy tones the originals just can't match. Gold hardware. Bigsby vibrato tailpiece.

Yamaha archtop cool color

I have two ES 335's, an ES 135 and an ES137. I also have a PRS Hollowbody II. I REALLY dig the archtop tone and vibe. That said I can't really fault anything on this instrument. Like all Yamaha instruments it is very well made and does what a guitar should do. BUT, it's like everything else made in Japan..think Camry...it is completely engineered and durable but it lacks vibe and character. I can't get inspired at all playing this guitar. Since tone is a personal thing I can say that I can feel my Gibson ES guitars, my PRS rocks...I just think people who make guitars in the USA are the best..they get it..this is after all the birthplace of all modern music...let's keep it here..the Asian market has taken everything else ..

Must admit out of all the guitars that I own, this is my favourite. Plays like a dream after setting up to suit the individual player. Very flexible in tone range from clean to dirty and finish is excellent. fact is that so impressed that I bought another in a different colour. Not as good a feel as the first all Black model but still a great guitar.

Bluesman462: Don't rate and instrument you do not own. It makes the review worthless and does nothing for your credibility. Now, back to those who speak from experience. I owned and AES1500 form 93-97 and traded it for a 175. Since then I have been searching for something that has the versatility and value of the Yamaha. I've found nothing. After 9 years searching for something that can handle everything from Soul to Rock to Jazz (BeBop to Contemporary), I am ordering my second one; and this time, I plan on keeping it!!

I have owned this beauty for about 9 months now. The split coils give this guitar a tonal range that will keep me from switching guitars halfway throughout a set because of limited tonal ranges others have. Don't listen to any who hasn't expiremented with what this can do!

Don't buy it

I've played a friends, and yes, the quality of the instrument is good, but it still really is the worst "archtop" I've ever played. The color is an eyesore. The pickup aren't for the style of music. The pickup selector is cheap. It doesn't sound that bad not plugged in though. Really, you shouldn't buy this guitar, and there's a reason it looks a Gretsch, that's what it Yamaha wishes it was!
