Tame the honk

I have been using this amp for a couple years now. When I first got it, I thought it sounded a bit "prickly", but hadn't turned it up yet. After I turned it up, still "prickly". So I ordered a set of JJ 6L6GC to go in it and some of there 12AX7 pre tubes. Better, but not quite the smooth top end I wanted. I ordered a pair of JJ KT77 power tubes. NOW we're getting somewhere. Then I booted the (not so great - insert your own adjective here) speaker and installed an Eminence Gov'ner 8ohm. Now we're talking! Much smoother on the highs. Use the boost channel. It's noisy, but the only way to get decent bottom on the drive side. I run a Decimator pedal in the effects loop to kill the hiss. The clean - it's my fav of any amp I've used. The reverb - it's good for just a hint (the way I like it) but it doesn't surf. I should have spent the extra bucks and bought a good, quiet, brit flavored amp and saved the bucks on the tubes, speaker, and (maybe) the noise supressor. But it'll do. BTW, if you play country, the drive channel w/out the boost and maybe a little Blues Driver and - "sweet"! Spanky!

Under-appreciated Amp

I have owned this amp for a few months know and I am impressed with what sounds I can get out of this amp. I am very picky and my tastes change a lot and so far I have been able to please my ear every time I play it. I recently installed NOS 12at7 is the 1st and 2nd tubes to lower the gain and I like this too. Stock speaker is good enough to use but any speaker would sound good. The 2 channels have separate EQs so this a true 2 channel amp. The clean sounds like the hot rod deluxe and the over drive is similar to the old Mesa crunch.

Very Impressive Amp

A friend asked me if I wanted his Red tolex YCV40, and I was not that interested at first. But after reading mostly rave reviews here and elsewhere, I dedeided to take it for the weekend and put it through the paces, at home and then with a rhythm duo. After going through it all evening with my mapleboard tele and strat, Gretsch Pro Jet, and Epi ES295, I can honestly say "Great Amp"! Clean, Mean, snd In-Between, this thing cuts through clearly - as good as my vintage Vibroluxes, Deluxes, and modded-out Twin Reverb, but with zero noise, and sparkles with balls ALMOST as good as my three Matchless amps. And for a fraction of what all those cost, you can play this thing worry free for a long time, it seems. Somehow, Traynor got that pure, responsive boutique sound in a production-line cost.

YCV40 Rocks

First off, don't get this amp thinking you're getting a high gain amp that can do chuggy palm muting or anything like that.

I absolutely love the cleans, and with a speaker change, like a Jensen, it would definitely sound amazing. Really chimey highs, and deep cleans. The reverb is kind of weak, and jumps from "in the back ground" to full on, eerie reverb at 9 and 10.

And then there's the drive channel. In all honestly, it's completely unusable on my LP's neck +bridge pickup setting for rhythm, much too muddy, but a speaker change can fix that, and it did. It doesn't have that high gain sustain, but it is very smooth sounding on the neck pickup, and pretty crunchy on the bridge pickup. It's great for say, Rage Against The Machine, or those heavy riffs and stuff, not so good for chuggy power chords though.

Construction is Excellent, very sturdy, although the knobs are very easily moved. My biggest quirk with this amp is that while you can access the power tubes easily, you do have to remove the chassis from the amp to get to the preamp tubes.

Other than that, it's an amazing bargain, great sound from this amp. I retubed it with tungsols in the preamp, and Svetlanas in the Power section. The automatic bias system is amazing, and the amp is dead quiet when I'm not strumming, no feedback at all. It only gets slight buzzing if I turn on my Fulltone OCD with the gain on full.

Great amp, great price, just be sure you know what you're getting before you order it. It's not for metal, but it can do hard rock easily.

Nice light gigging amp.

Have played out every week-end with this amp for 2 years now. Pretty happy with it. The speaker is really not up to snuff tone-wise, but I've used it with a Marshall 4 X 10" cab (1965B) ever since I've purchased it. Most tube amps will sound pretty smooth starting with everything at 12:00, but the Traynor does need the bass rolled-off and the mid-range tweaked for your individual guitar. The tone controls seem to be a little more "active" than most amps. Once you find your settings, this amp will sing. Negatives: The speaker outputs are hard to access, the "chicken-beak" knobs turn way to easy during transit. (I carry a printout of my prefered setings with me), the fore-mentioned sensitivity of the tone controls, the two channels have a very different tonal center and the "boost" function is way over-the-top for practical use. (I set the lead channel for a similar tone and a slight volume boost for lead work). These short-comings are small compared to the pound-for-pound value, great tone, and durability of this amp.
