A fingerstylist s dream, this small-body guitar shines on stage, in the studio, or in your lap Grand Concert Bob Taylor introduced the small-bodied Grand Concert in 1984 as an alternative to the boomier tonal tendencies of traditional, larger-bodied guitars. The GC spoke to the evolving styles of acoustic guitarists at that time, as solo instrumental fingerstyle music was growing in popularity. Bob developed the GC with input from Chris Proctor, the 1982 National Fingerpicking Champion, who would go on to be Taylor s first guitar clinician. Proctor wanted a comfortable body shape with clarity and balance from bass to treble, a cutaway, and a wider neck than the 1-11/16 then used on the Taylor Dreadnought and Jumbo. Beyond its compatibility with fingerstyle players, the GC s smaller body and tapered waist made it the ultimate studio and stage guitar. With its controlled overtones, it doesn t take up too much sonic space an important consideration if other instruments are being recorded, and it records well with a microphone. The GC also curbed the kind of sonic bloom that often caused feedback with bigger guitars on stage. The GC body geometry and sound have continued to evolve in recent years. In 2004, the body depth was expanded by a quarter-inch, and it was revoiced to add volume and bass response, giving the GC a tone that belies its intimate size. Great sounding, great playing guitar

Elegant simplicity is the operative term here. Construction is flawless, and the features are basic. Mine even lacks the pickguard shown in the catalog.

The tone and playability are first rate. Excellent for fingerpicking with or without thumb pick. The bass is suprisingly strong, yet does not overpower midrange or treble. Excellent for flatpicking as well. Volume is surprisingly strong - suitable for anything short of a driving string band.

My purchase decision was a toss up between it and the Taylor GC7, which I thought had a sligthly superior tone - so sligthly superior that I went with the GC3 and saved with no regrets.

I received my Taylor GC3 about a week ago (Aug. '07). Upon opening the box and case, I was instantly impressed by the dramatic "bear-claw" figuring in the Spruce top [the gloss finish is fantastic]. I was originally drawn to this guitar because of the simple appointments and lack of "overkill" features. The only feature that I would've changed is the nut & saddle material [I prefer bone (instead of tusq)]. The GC3's tone is well balanced and versatile.. and quite-a-bit louder than I anticipated. In summary, this guitar is very comfortable and resonant. Especially if you enjoy sittin' on a stool and plucking some acoustic blues/folk, you'll find the GC3 to be very satisfying.

I got mine with the optional Taylor electronics built-in. This is a great sounding guitar when not plugged in, but nothing really beats a dreadnought for a full acoustic sound, so this small-bodied guitar will mostly be used in a band setting and plugged in. As with all guitars, fit and finish sometimes vary from guitar to guitar. The one I bought is as well done as Taylor's high-end models. I've gotten stuck with sloppy workmanship on lower end models from Taylor before, but not on this one. The GC3 is perfect. Not a flaw on it. The action is set just right. No string breakage (as reported on some Taylors with Elixir strings). The smallness of it makes it very comfortable, yet it doesn't sound too thin. It's bright, but not cheap sounding. The guitar stays in tune, the electronics aren't invasive and even the case is very nice. I am assuming that with proper care, this guitar will last a long time and will begin to sound even better after a couple of years. In my book, no Taylor is inexpensive, but this one isn't beyond reach price-wise. It's solid wood all around, and the ebony fretboard and frets are smooth. No sharp frets! The bound neck makes it even nicer feeling. The guitar has a real professional feel. There isn't a pick guard, so it has a very neat look about it. It's certainly worth a try if you are looking for a compact guitar with top of the line features. I tend to lean towards Martin guitars, but this Taylor is a winner in looks, feel and sound.
