A true strummer that will impress in any pickers circle.
The Taylor DN4 Acoustic Guitar was crafted with classic dreadnought design in mind. This Taylor guitar combines back and sides of beautiful ovangkol, which many find reminiscent of rosewood. A Sitka spruce top gives the DN4 guitar the punch to create a rich tonal tapestry. The Taylor DN4 has a booming bass and articulate mid tones that dare you to dig in and challenge your flatpicking prowess. Appointments include a bound ebony neck, chrome plated tuners, and an Indian rosewood headstock overlay.
The traditional shape and sound have been refined to blend power with a more balanced response
Bob Taylor launched his career crafting Dreadnoughts, working with shapes he inherited from Sam Radding, the owner of the American Dream guitar shop, where he and Taylor co-founder Kurt Listug got their start.
The legacy of this shape carried a powerful, traditional sound that Bob gradually reworked into a refined Taylor tone and more smoothly contoured look. The rosewood/spruce 810 became a Taylor stalwart and was for many years Bob s preferred model, favored for its robust tone and understated, workmanlike aesthetic.
In 2003 the Dread underwent a major revoicing to give it a more competitive identity among old school flatpickers. A cannon, it boasted 50 percent more volume (which also meant more dynamic range), yielded an appreciably stronger bass response, and let out a hearty growl when pickers dug in, all without upsetting Taylor s sonic balance. As Bob put it during the revoicing process: I want to be able to play a Dreadnought on the bass strings and then on these middle D and G strings and have it sound like the same guitar.
Bob later applied some of his ideas to the 710ce-L9 limited in 2005, and it proved to be a winner. Like the short-scale GC, the slinkier feel allowed players to lighten up on their attack and play up the neck. It gave the Dreadnought more versatility than it had ever seen. The Taylor Dreadnought delivers a vintage sound for the 21st Century.
Play a Dreadnought if: You re a flatpicker or strummer looking for a potent, traditional sound.

Taylor DN4 Ovangkol/Spruce Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar
While it's great for strumming (even hard strumming), it shines as a great fingerpicking guitar. Great sustain, full even tone all the way down the fretboard. I would heartily recommend it. The fit, finish, and playability are superb.

After about 6 months of heavy playing I feel this guitar is worthy of a good review. I'm normally pretty harsh when it comes to reviews, especially if I'm not satisfied with something. I can honestly say this guitar was a HUGE blessing in disguise and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I was originally eyeing a DN3 and a Martin D16RGT. The DN4 was a bit more pricey but I decided to give it a shot and WOW -- heavy bass for a Taylor and very, very well-balanced. I own a few Taylors and the most accurate of the tonal range would be my GS6 (Maple) but this DN4 really competes. I still dream of one day owning an 800 series, but realistically I can't justify the price. The DN4 offers great range with solid low-end, *superb mids, and bright highs. Very similar to rosewood, but less bass and more mid-range. It's a perfect strummer and can handle some fingerstyle as well. I actually lucked out and found a DN4 with factory installed Expression System, so it's a DN4e. Great price, solid mid-level guitar. Worthy of gigging but one of many oustanding Taylors that El Cajon has to offer this season. Well done Taylor Guitars!

I primarily play fingerstyle so my review is slightly left of center. The DN4 is a well made dreadnaught as per most Taylors but this guitar lends itself so much better to strumming than fingerpicking. The Ovangkol is balanced and clean but not particularly deep or rich in tone. I like this guitar for strumming and flatpicking but not so much for fingerstyle. For new or intermediate players it is a great first Taylor.

The particular DN4 that I own is Superb. My Dad owned a Martin D-45 and a Martin D-35. It's been years since I've played them...but this guitar is Superb. I said I would NEVER own a Taylor...it would be unAmerican...but guess what? I'm now the very proud owner of a Taylor DN4 and 'tis a Superb instrument like I said. My son also owns a brushed aluminum Martin. Martins are wonderful...and I traded in my Martin D-15 towards the purchase of this guitar. No regrets about this trade up! I recommend this guitar without a doubt.

Sweet sounding, sweet playing dreadnought

I was searching for the perfect higher-end gigging guitar. My criteria were, in this order: (1) it must sound fantastic through an amp/PA; (2) it must be comfortable and a joy to play; (3) it must have a great unamplified sound too; and (4) must look cool. My new Taylor DN4e fits this bill perfectly.
I was not looking for a Taylor - I'm a Martin player. But after playing every guitar in sight in several stores, I stumbled upon this beauty. It's a dreadnought and lacks a cutaway, so it doesn't look like most Taylors you'll see. It has the most balanced, lovely unamplified tone, great sustain, and through an amp it sounds absolutely fantastic. The fingerboard is comfortable, the neck a bit wide but fast, and the action is perfect - don't even need to take it in for a setup.
The guitar is also beautiful in an understated way. The gloss spruce top is lovely, and the ovangkol back and sides are really stunning, although I wish the back and sides were gloss finished too (hence the 4.5's). My only other complaint is that the Taylor hardshell case has a cheap, flimsy feel to it. Other than that, this is a fantastic guitar and I can't wait till my next gig to play it!
