Stripped down, souped-up Soldano overdrive tone!

The Soldano Avenger Amplifier Head delivers the classic overdrive of the legendary SLO 100. 100-watt head with the SLO 100 overdrive circuit and no channel switching or effects loop to complicate things. This simplified signal path also improves dynamic response for a punchier sound. High- and low-gain input jacks provide the option of using the full SLO lead circuit or skipping the first gain stage for a darker crunch tone. In addition to the preamp gain, bass, middle, treble, master volume, and presence controls, a depth control is included for boosting low end. A rotary impedance selector switch on the amp head allows the use of 4-, 8-, or 16-ohm speaker cabinets. Like the SLO, the Soldano Avenger uses 5881/6L6 power tubes.

Good But Not Great

I've had the Avenger head for a couple weeks, I like it but don't love it. It is a good sounding amp, well made, very quiet and pretty dynamic for a single channel head. I set the gain between 5-7 and it gives me plenty of distortion. Cleans-up pretty well by rolling down the guitar volume, without a huge loss of overall volume. Lots of bottom end, very warm. Smoother/more musical and quiter then Marshall JVM. Bass tends to be kind of round with the 6L6 power section.

This amp is truly amazing. You can get a ton of tones out of this thing, and its as simple as can be. I play in a hardcore style band so this amp was a perfect choice for me due to the fact that I don't switch channels. To get cleaner style tones I just roll back the volume on my guitar. I run a Gibson LP with a TS808 through it and out into an Orange cab and it just cant get any better. THIS AMP IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been about 5 1/2 months since I got this beast, and I keep enjoying it more and more as the weeks go by. I got it mostly for the chugg this thig can generate, I used to love scooping my mids. But the more I dialed in my mids and learned where to place the pre-amp the better this thing actually sounded. I really had to hold out ton a review for sometime, since i didn't want to gush over it after having for only 2 weeks. It's a well balanced amp that is great for Heavy sounding music, it cleans up pretty well too with the roll of the volume nob. It's also great for classic rock as well when it's dimed back a bit. The Low Imput is especially great for cleans to mild distortion, but works very well with pedals too. But that's not wht I use it for. I dial the pre-amp to 6, bass at 7, mids at 8, treble at 7, presence at 3, depth at 5, and Master Vol at no more than 2.5 for now. Did I say that this amp is loud as hell :-), well it is. I also just updated to a Vader 2x15 cab and it sounds sweet for heavy metal now.

I bought this after 5 minutes of demoing. Just a fantastic no frills amp. 1 channel, 2 completely different inputs that are both quite usable. High input, hard crunch to modern hard rock. Low input, bluesy swagger and good for some slight breakup cleans. My buddie was getting some great Jerry Cantrell tone out of it the other night. I have noticed that it's a pretty honest amp for tone. For what I do that is very important!It is now a staple here at my shop for testing out the pups I make. Good on ya Mike Soldano and company!

I have been using SOLDANO amps since 1992. I still have ny HR50 which I bought in 92/93. I actuualy chose the AVENGER over theSLO. My HR50 sounds very similar to the SLO. The AVENGER is a "modern" version of the SLO. Well a single channel version. SOLDANO amps have proven themselves to be worthy of the price the carry. In both construction and tone. The avenger can deliver any aggressive sound you want. The depthmod gives you a manageable extra low end for that modern sound and when it is turned down it is stil a hard driven amp...Coupled wih the soldano stock 4x12 is a match made in heaven. SOLDANO amps give me "MY" sound, the amp is responsive to all of my picking and playing nuances it is very articulate while still being aggressive. I only use a crybaby sometimes with this amp. If you are a strat player you may want to try the SLO first. I would try both the AVENGER and the SLO side by side. Thats wat I did I couldnt stop playin the AVENGER.
