Great value, surprising guitar

I wanted a cheap grand concert, and my previous experience with a Rogue 5-string bass was very good so I decided to pick up the Rogue Grand Concert. I didn't really expect much, so I've been pleasantly surprised for the last few months.

While the decal rosette didn't do it for me, the finish is fairly good, the guitar is slim and comfortable to hold, the electronics are good, the neck was pretty well finished and the action was nice and low. I thought I was going to have to replace the tuners, but it turned out whoever strung the guitar did it wrong on every peg *LOL*

I was surprised to discover that even though this is an under $80 guitar AND a slim body, it sounded pretty good - definitely better than First Act, Mitchell and some low end Epiphones. Then I restrung it with Martin Silk and Steels for the wound strings, Martin Marquis 10s for the unwound and wow! My Rogue GC now sounds like a Yamaha FG730S, I kid you not! And I always liked that sort of silvery tone, so I couldn't be happier.

There is one thing I wasn't thrilled with - I wish it had a wider nut. This is only 1 10/16", and it wasn't easy to find that out in advance. Still, the guitar is surprisingly playable considering that, and doesn't bother me unless I play for quite a while. I guess the neck angle and profile must be making up for the size of the nut.

If you're looking for a high end guitar with high end features, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a starter or beater guitar with better-than-you'd-expect electronics, a cutaway, a great feel and good sound, it's hard to beat this baby. I'd definitely recommend it.

I normally would not bother to give my two cents worth in a public forum, but I must admit I am impressed with this instrument. There are a couple very minor blemishes, the string alignment at the tuning head could be better, and it needs a second strap button. That's the end of the bad news. This thing sounds great - plugged in or not! I had read reviews about the bass lacking quality due to the smaller body size. I was going to high-string this (Nashville tuning), thinking this would be an appropriate instrument for such a back-up type guitar. It sounds way too good for that. I HATE to say, this will get more play than my 1978 Ovation that I paid big bucks for thirty years ago. And it still sounds just like it did when I bought brand new. I'm going to have to order a second one of these for the Nashville tuning - this one sounds too good just as it is. Maybe I just got "good wood", and a little lucky. This is an exreme value.

Be prepared to have it set up before using...

Bought one of these in "like new" condition from the MF website. As soon as I opened the box, I knew why the first customer returned it. The guitar was in *drastic* need of a setup out of the box. This is not really unusual, but the action was so whacked that it was really pretty much totally unplayable. The saddle was about twice as high as it needed to be, and the nut held the strings about a good 3/16 up off of the first fret...I spent the better part of a whole night lowering the action to acceptable specs and getting the truss rod where it needed to be, and the effort was worth it, as the guitar now plays quite well. Please be aware that if you don't have the skills and the specialized tools needed to set up a new guitar from scratch, you'll need to pay a guitar tech to do this for you, which can make what seemed like a great deal not so good after paying for the setup...

Gr. Conc. is an excel value. MS shipped prompt - incl amp cable & included a padded gig bag to sweeten the deal. Added a Levy strap to match sunburst & Planet Waves Q.R. to attach it. Neck rel.010 & Bridge hght .100 -excel out of box. Stores have someone adjust action at 1st frett. etc. I filed nut slots to my desired hght per string. MF is sending Martin strings also. Needs light guage & not the medium 'Addario strings. Finish/look on par with expensive guitars. Nice sound with my amp.

i purchased this guitar as something to start practicing with my new band,i love this guitar beyond belief. the tuning motors keep the guitar in tune for a good while compared to other guitars.i didnt like the strings that came with it,so i suggest buying extra light Ernie Ball Earthwoods.overall my favorite thig about this guitar is that its loud and clean, the pictures on here dont do the guitar any justice.
