The 240W Randall G3 RG200G3PLUS is a beefy guitar combo amp that features Valve-Dynamic power and 2 x 12" Celestion Seventy 80's. 2 channels with 3 modes give you plenty of tones to choose from, and you can tweak them just the way you want with voicing and contour controls, built-in spring reverb, and a series effects loop to connect your favorite stomp boxes. An included footswitch maximizes control without interrupting your playing.

The G3 series becomes more intense and aggressive with a completely redesigned preamp circuit, introducing G3 Plus. Randall took the tone circuit of their premier V2 and T2 amplifiers and installed it in the G3 Plus models to provide an even higher level of performance without the costs of a high end amplifier. With a menacing new semi-gloss black finish, G3 Plus also looks as mean as it sounds.

The Power of Valve-Dynamic.
Breaking the tone barrier between Tube and FET has been a challenge to most amp designers for a long time. But, during the recent development of the V2 and T2, Randall made several ground breaking discoveries that allowed them to narrow in as to why tube power reacts and feels so much differently than a traditional solid-state power amp. Those discoveries, as you'll hear this year, resulted in the revolutionary new "Valve-Dynamic" power section.

Incorporating a single 12AT7 tube to drive a large MOSFET output circuit, this highly advanced power circuit has a natural compression that clips extremely softly at higher volumes reacting very much like a traditional power tube. The key this circuit was capturing the true frequency response curve of a power tube. Randall's Valve-Dynamic circuit not only captures a tube's reactive qualities, but also the warmth, feel, and musical character of full-tube power amp, but with the durability and reliability of a MOSFET power amplifier.

This beast was shockingly queit at low volumes for something that shook a house around three. After a year and a half the thing just died. I would recomend getting the head and some sort of speaker cab so when it goes on you, some thing is still working. The master volume needs to be at a minimum of four for the amp to actually sound good. The clean boost on this thing was awesome hands down the best of the bells and whistles on this amp. the overdrive channels were use at your own risk, some times it was incredible, but most of the time it kinda well you know. The line out function is horrible because it has no volume contols. Long story short if you have the money and a reason to buy this monster of an amp, by the rg300 head.

Hybrid Amp, Tube Tone

I have been in search of a good practice amp, without the high tube amp price, for several years. I have an incredible, very expensive, Groove Tubes live rig and have been spoiled by the versatility and tonal options of my rig. In the recent past, I purchased a Line 6 Spider III, Vox AD50VT, and Kustom wAv 212 (very nice amp). I did not care at all for the Line 6 or Vox amps. I found the clean channels lacking sparkle and the distortion channels lacking definition and that "tube feel." The Kustom came closest with a great sounding clean channel. But, the distortion, although good, was not exactly what I was looking for.

When Musician's Friend offered the Randall amps at 50% off, I figured I'd give the RG200G3PLUS a shot. Also, I read the technical description in a trade magazine that described how Randall places the 12AT7 tube in the output section of the amp - rather than in the preamp section. This made sense to me and thought I would try it solely based on this difference.

I have absolutely no regrets in this purchase. The amp sounds amazing in both clean and distortion channels. I opted for the spring reverb model rather that the amp with built-in digital effects. This was another good choice as the spring reverb sounds great. A nice plus is the included 4-button footswitch. It seems to be good quality and I expect it to last for the duaration.

The tolex covering is also very nice. The grain pattern is cosmetically pleasing and the material joints seem to be assembled very well. This amp is also fairly heavy (63 lbs.). But, it seems very well built.

There are, however, a couple things I would have preferred that would have made this a "perfect" purchase. A cover for the amp would have been a nice option as well as removable casters. But, these are minor concerns and in no way detract from my satisfaction with this amp.

By the way, this is one LOUD!!! amp. It's rated at 240W into 4 Ohms. It can certainly run with the Big Dogz.
