The Texas 'Bone' is a high-performance overdrive pedal capable of generating everything from vintage 'TS9' style tones all the way to the latest ultra high-gain 'in-your-face' tones. Inside is a minimalist high-gain drive circuit that lets you add bluesy textures or when driven hard, will produce harmonically rich tones that are fatter than a Texas Longhorn and more fun than a rattlesnake neck tie.

The Texas overdrive effect pedal employs a unique high-performance buffering circuit with preset load correction that retains the performance of 'true bypass' connectivity while lowering the impedance and susceptibility to noise. This enables the Texas to efficiently drive the guitar signal when using longer cables and lets it employ Radial's own EIS - Electronic Impulse Switching for outstanding durability without the challenges of mechanical switches.

For maximum on-stage efficiency, the Radial Bones Texas pedal is configured for 'clean, rhythm & lead' playability whereby in bypass mode, you get the natural clean sound of your guitar. When the Texas is activated, you can choose between two channels using the toggle footswitch. Each channel is equipped with its own tone and level control that lets you adjust each sound to your specific needs. For instance, you can set the rhythm tone with extra high end to cut through at lower volumes while the pedal's lead channel can be set with more bottom end to fatten up the tone for solos. This is augmented with two 3-position 'bite' switches that let you assign each channel for vintage style overdrive, extra beef, or a more aggressive modern tonal structure. To increase sustain and cut for solos, channel-2 is augmented in the mid-range.

Nice Idea, but.......

It's hard to not like this pedal. I've tried it through a Hot Rod Deluxe, Kustom Defender, and a solid state Behringer. Sounded the best with the Fender. But this pedal adds a lot of bass and the deluxe is already a dark sounding amp. A somewhat harsh top end too. It's really a hot OD with a boost switch, not two seperate levels of gain. And at unity with amp volume you can barely crack the level knob. I might keep it in hopes of one day having a amp that it likes.

Despite the price tag, I really wanted to like this pedal a lot. I've played over 40 years, looking for a perfect OD and had hopes this one would be it. The combination of two overdrives in a compact pedal, Radial's reputation for tone, and a TS9 clone with more grit and drive was exciting. For 2 weeks at daily rehearsals and in my home studio with my Strat and Vibrolux, I compared the Texas with a TS9, Bad Monkey, Boss OS2, and Blues Driver. Hooked them all into a chain and went one by one.

Pluses: Easy to operate, lots of drive if you need it, excellent tone variations, excellent quality build. It even solved a pet peeve of mine that stomp boxes should have In/Out at the top, not the sides, to conserve pedalboard space.

Minuses: First this pedal is VERY hot. At my regular amp settings, I could never set the Level control above 9:00. This seriously limited the interplay between the Level and Drive controls. Second, I was really hoping the 3 position switch did more to augment the drive, not the tone. Despite how you have channels 1 and 2 set, the 3 position switch did little for gain, but seemed to boost mids and lows. This leaves just ONE drive control for TWO channels. The tone control will let you adjust for two TONES but not for varying degrees of Drive. Third, I was really disappointed in the overall tone. It had a very digital, bright sound that was unusable for me behind a wah or compressor. I could never get a truly warm overdrive tone.

I can see how this pedal might appeal to some. It's just not for me.

And while I love my old TS9, the pedal that I keep coming back to the cheapest - the Bad Monkey.
