Perfect rock 'n blues tone

A perfect small amp for everyday situations. If you need more sound, just put it through a cabinet. 40 watts is a lot.

The sound is beautiful. Pretty straightfoward amp. Un input... Gain, Master, Treble, Mid, Bass and Presence... what else do you need??? ok, a guitar with a volume knob and you're set to go.

I used to put a lot of pedals before the amps I used, until I got this little piggy... now all I put is booster, maybe an overdrive, and in sometimes an analog delay or a vibe...

cleans up nicely with the guitar volume knob.. but it also wants/likes to rock!!! a lot!!!

amazing amp, specially for it's value and size

GREAT amp with some simple mods

I got my first Pig in New Orleans about 7 years ago, and added a couple more not long after. It sounded crappy until replacing the speaker and tubes. I Used a Celestion 10" and Sovtek tubes. It took on a whole new life of its own then. Sounds great at low volume, and really shines with preamp about "1 1/2" and master 3/4 up. Tone controls function best w/ mid no higher than 2. All my effects work really well with this amp, as well as every guitar I've used with it. Sound men love it, though they snicker when I first set it up on a large stage. Most bands I've opened for have had to stick their heads in the back and take a look after our set. You won't find another amp this size with the sound and power that will make you leave the rest at home. It will allow for massive controlled feedback, if you desire, and nice punchy clean tones, too. Did I mention I LOVE these amps? Both of mine didn't seem to like Groove Tubes, so will stick with Sovteks and save the $. The GT's seemed to cause a huge buzz. The Sovteks are nice and quiet. The Pig will push the crap out of larger speaker cabs w/out breathing hard, as well. Try one.

An honest review!

I have now owned two G40V’s. The first one needed to have both the input and output transformers replaced and I got rid of it because I got tired of repairing it. I recently found one used at a great price, so I decided to give the amp another try. Turned out it also needed a new input tranny! I was off to a poor start with the thing.

With a new input tranny I have now played through the amp about 30 hrs. I am a vintage collector and tone pilgrim My other amps include: ‘50 TV front Tweed Fender Pro, a 1959 narrow-panel tweed Deluxe, a 1960 brown 2-10 Super, a early ’65 blackface Deluxe Reverb, ’65 Blackface Fender Bassman, ’67 blackface Super Reverb, 1975 Fender silver face Vibrosonic, Original Marshal 45 stack, Mesa MK III (bluestripe), and a bunch of newer stuff, both tube and solid state. I’ve been playing about 30 years and have been a professional recording engineer and producer for about 23 years. I know tone!

My feelings? Well, the G40V sounds quite good. I think (hope) the ones made today have more reliable trannys than the earlier ones. However, I would still feel uneasy gigging one without a back-up. They are so cheap that most folks can afford to buy a spare. I recommend replacing the speaker right away. I have had good luck with Celestion 10’s as well as Eminence. However, if you REALLY want this amp to sound full and juicy, put a hemp-cone Tone Tubby in it, you will be amazed. The speaker will cost nearly as much as the amp, but the result will be guaranteed to drop jaws. At that point it’s in the same general category as an early 1-12 Mesa Boogie, for a lot less scratch! For reliability, I would also recommend replacing all the stock tubes.

Another recommendation would be to do a google search on this amp and research it a little before you buy. The tone-stack is a bit unique. Most tone coinsures will suggest you start with the midrange just barely up, the bass almost maxed and the treble at a bit less than 12:00. Presence to taste, I usually run it almost all the way down. I also run the input gain fairly low and the master as high as needed for volume. That makes it sound a lot like say for instance my blackface Fender Bassman. The distortion is not bad on this amp, but I greatly prefer to keep the amp clean and have my modded tube-screamers provide the grit.

Take all the reviews you read with a grain of salt. I read all of the reviews on the G40V. Some made me laugh; as if they were written by 12 year olds. The G40 V is a great little tube amp with a good design that suffers from being produced in China using cheap Chinese components. With good tubes and a good replacement speaker it sounds like a great tube amp should. It loves pedals like any good tube amp does, and it really excels when given the chance to drive large speaker cabs. When driving a full stack of two Marshall 4-12 cabs, it stands up well compared to actual Marshall heads of a similar wattage and sounds phenomenal.

Big Tube Sound

I've owned the G40V for about five years now, and it's served me flawlessly. It's loud. Can't say much else about that. The gain (called Volume) can give some really, really nice sounds with a Gibson style guitar, but, IMO, it just sounds tinny and waaaay too needly-sharp with a Strat. The presence control is nice, but again, it makes it sound sharp, adding a really papery high-end rasp. I've had no reliability issues from mine. What I really love is that I can plug in a Les Paul or SG, crank it up and nail the guitar tone from Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4". Understandable, since Chicago's guitarist in the 70s, Terry Kath was one of the first Pignose endorsers.

Pignose Solution

I was having probs with my G60VR and I went through a few techs and they said "do the dumb stuff first." I was lucky it was just tube replacement, but in the process I talked to the Pignose man in Arizona,he said the prob with the few 40's is,one run of them had a 1amp fuse in place of the 10amp that is supposed to be in there(watts or amp's I can't remember, open her up and look for the burned out fuse) the dude putting them together had a box it said 10amp so he started the assembly. As I said before I think amp but just read the burned fuse, you'll figure it out. No matter what ANYONE says these tube amps rock it hard!
