Forget Fender

This review is for a Music Man Albert Lee Model guitar. I have played this guitar and it is better than any Strat I have owned and I have had 7 Strats, 5 American and 2 Mexican. It is great for county pickin' but I play Bluesrock so I opted for the P-90's version. Music Man makes the best affordable guitars around. I own 5 and this is my sixth. Mine has the vintage tremolo and that's the only thing I don't like because it only dive bombs.I prefer a floating tremolo. My Albert is vintage sunburst, like the photo but has a pearl white pickguard with white pups and black knobs. Since no one has mentioned the Silent Circuit in this guitar I will say that it is amazing! I tried 3 different P-90 guitars and they all made lots of noise. Even static when you run your hand up and down the neck. The Strings are 10's but not too stiff as other guitars. I do a lot of major bending so I switched to D'Addario 9.5's without having to adjust the neck which is very simple. My style is similar to Coco Montoya and Walter Trout. This is the guitar I have been looking for, for 10 years! They are in stock and hard to find, so buy one NOW!!!

Great Guitar

I am reviewing an Ernie Ball Albert Lee guitar. It is a pinkburst, translucent finished, maple necked instrument. Neck and headstock are highly figured with lots of flame and some birdseye. The finish is the best, bar none that I have ever played. Like a well used axe handle. Control are very well layed out and easily accessed without getting in the way of your picking hand. The locking tuners are a breeze to restring, although if you use a .oo9 or smaller 1st string, you may have to take a wrap to insure against slippage. I used .011's for a long time, but now use 010's. The bridge is a hardtail design, with old style "strat" saddles. I replaced them with solid Music Man saddles that come on another model, as I prefer their design. They are similar to Fender American Standard "Tele" saddles, but are solid , not cast. The body cavity and underside of the pickguard are fully shielded, and wiring is very tidy, with neat solder joints. Also pickguard assembly is easily remove without breaking any solder joints, via a high quality connecter. This enables you to exchange various colors etc, in about 5 minutes. Playability is excellent. The neck is shaped not too flat, and not too fat, with the best fretwire size for bending and speed picking. 10" neck radius has a vintage feel, but flat enough to avoid fretting out when string bending. Duncan Alnico II pickups are superb with excellent response, and articulation. Guitar is light and resonates acoustically like it is alive. This guitar is excellent for a variety of styles, with jazz being the the least favorable, although I beleive you can get a pretty fair jazz sound when desired. I play this guitar through a Fender Twin reissue, 1966 Fender Princeton, Mesa Boogie Subway Blues, with no effects except reverb and get compliments on it's sound. Recently played it through a Matchless Chieftan 2x12 combo with a little delay, and I'm still blown away that it could sound even better. All in all if I had to have one electric, which is what I have at present, it is this guitar. The modified american standard tele, 52' reissue tele, and gibson sg have all fallen by the wayside. For a strat, tele hybrid working mans guitar, it don't get no better. I've been playing electric and acoustic guitar for 36 years in styles ranging from Hendrix to Stevie Ray, to Ricky Scaggs and everythin in between, and this guitar will "git 'er done.

I love it's almost hotrod style design, and its electronics are wonderful, get a good low end out of the bridge pick-up good for palm muting and its great for solos, especially good for chicken' picken since I believe Albert invented the technique that makes sense. From riffs to solos its a great guitar.

my main axe!

I own 2 of the Albert Lee model guitars, both hardtails and with the SSS configuration. What can I say, it's my favorite guitar. They're so light, and they balance wonderfully. The sound is as good as any strat you're likely to hear, only with a fatter tele-like punch from the bridge pickup due to it's bottom located baseplate. Ernie Ball MusicMan guitars are wonderful instruments, if you haven't played one yet. Do yourself a favor and check one out. Guys like Albert Lee, Steve Morse, John Petrucci and Steve Lukather can't be wrong...
