An authentic re-creation of the legendary 1937 masterpiece.

This special edition D-18 acoustic guitar is Martin's loving recreation of the original 1937 guitar, now a highly sought-after collector's item. Crafted with mahogany back and sides, a solid Adirondack top with the X-brace and scalloped braces of the period, hide glue, vintage toner on top, ebony bridge with long saddle (2-5/16" string spacing), and a tortoise pickguard. The neck is also formed exactly as the original and reinforced with a traditional non-adjustable T-bar.

Ebony fretboard (1-3/4" nut, 25.4" scale), small abalone position dots, fossil ivory nut and saddle, ebony bridge pins, 30's style hardshell case. The features and details add up to a true masterpiece of the luthier's art, with all the storied sound quality that graced the original pre-war guitar.

I made a trip to Knoxville, TN recently, so I decided to visit the music store there. I am a mostly acoustic guitar player, so I thought I would check out their acoustic room. They have a special room where they keep most of the expensive acoustics like Gibsons, Taylors, a few Breedloves, and of course Martins. I started off playing some of the Breedloves. They didn't impress me much(one twelve string got my attention though), they could have used new strings, however. Moved on to the Taylors, which where nice, but nothing really called out to me. Finally the to the Martins. I try not to be too much of a brand snob, but I can always find a Martin I like. My current acoustic is a 2004 D-18 Golden Era in Sunburst(if you have not tried one you are missing out on a hell of a guitar). Now this is a review of D-18 1937, so I thought they would be similar. Boy was I wrong. This guitar made my jaw drop to floor. The bass that came out of this guitar was amazing. I could feel it vibrate all the way to my toes. The whole room resonated when I played an open E chord. I just sat there and hit the E for at least 5 minutes straight. It was like it was plugged up an amp, it was that load. The guitar played very much like my D-18, only better, because of the similar string spacing. I would have to say that this is my favorite guitar I have ever played, the Trey Anastasio Signature is second, and my D-18GE is third(nothing against the other GE's, mine is just a little more broken in). If you ever get a chance to play one, I highly recommend it. Is it expensive? Oh yes. Is it worth it? Maybe. It depends on how deep your pockets are.

This guitar feels and plays like a fine instrument. It is feather light. The sound is sweet and mellifluous. It is a very simple guitar. The Martin 18 models are not over adorned with inlay; they are understated and elegant. Chords arrive lush and full; yet, the sound of each individual string sings through. When planning single note runs, the notes are crisp, accurate, and sharp. Yet, I can clearly hear harmonics from various areas of the soundboard. The mahogany is not as aggressive as the rosewood, but it does sing. This is probably entirely psychological, but I do get a sense that the animal glues are allowing the soundboard to vibrate a little more evenly than the soundboards on my modern Martins, Goodalls, or Santa Cruzes.
