Soud improves with age

I bought mine new in 1999, as I had been interested in the old style 12 fret, for many years. I once owned a 1952 00-21 but traded it for a used M38 because I was unhappy with the sound. I should have tried extra-light strings or silk-and-steel!

Anyway, over the years I noticed that the sound on the new 000-28VS gradually lost what I found to be a mid-range peak, and became much smoother throughout the scale. I think this might apply to many new guitars, that it takes time for the integrated wooden parts to become flexible in concert with the whole unit. But in time, a guitar of this quality will improve in sound, which is probably why so many old Martins excel. The factory set-up was perfect as far as I can tell, and after ten years I have needed no adjustments whatsoever. I have consistently used Martin SP extra-light strings on this one. I also self-installed a McIntye pickup inside, which requires no alteration other than enlarging the end pin hole. This pickup has a great natural sound and wide range. It sticks to the bridge plate with sticky putty. It does not affect the sound of the guitar in any way, other than allow you to plug in to an amp.

I own an 1995 Custom HD-28S, the same guitar as the HD-28VS, before Martin came out with their "Vintage Series" in 1996. I bought it used in '97 and play it until I pass it on to my son. These guitars have the original 30's Dreadnought design - slope shoulder with 12 frets clear of the body. They are loud when you want them to be and soft when you are fingerpicking. A great instrument for any style of playing. The 1" longer body gives you more volume, with unbelievable overtones and sustain. I believe this is one of the best guitar designs ever made. Several other high end makers are putting out 12 frets to the body guitars, so the word is certainly out. I have been playing acoustic guitar since the 60's and would put the sound of my 14 year old HD-28S up against any guitar. For a very versatile guitar with dynamite sound and great appointments you can't go wrong with the HS-28VS.

One very fine fingerstyle guitar

Martin makes a wide variety of guitars suitable for being played fingerstyle, but the 000-28 excels at it. The wider fretboard and the exceptionally balanced tone make it ideal. The 12-fret access, while a limitation for upper fret access allow it to have a bigger internal volume and that results in a surprisingly big lush low end. The vintage style V-shaped neck may take some getting use to, but it fits my large hands quite nicely. It has very appealing herringbone apppointments and I particularly like the look because it doesn't have a pick guard (unnecessary for a fingerstyle player).

Overall the 000-28 is a great sounding instrument for fingerstyle music.

This is a keeper!!

I have been playing this guitar for about a year now and find it to be a fine instrument. I am a fingerstylist coming from a classical background and find that this guitar responds to all my demands. It can play loud and it can play so soft you can barely hear it. Soft tones, hard tones, they are all there! I have recorded with this guitar with great results, just use a good mic to get the full range of the subtleties this thing produces. It has been called the best box that Martin is making today and I have to agree. This things just sings under the fingers. It will only get better and more valuable as time goes by, which can't be said for many guitars that Martin and others are making today. Word of warning here: good woods are becoming very difficult to obtain and instruments of this quality are reaching the end of the line. If you are thinking of getting one then don't wait too long. I know Martin and Taylor have slowed their production due to lack of woods available. To way-lay any doubts I am a player with 40+ years behind guitars and have been buying Martins since the mid 60's.
