Warm compression, simple to use

Just got one of these babies. I really like it. I've been very satisfied using my Dyna-Comp and was interested to check out the new SuperComp when it was introduced not too long ago. Used it for my first time tonight, and again I am very happy with its performance. The attach knob really can warm up the sound and add transparency. But you can still get the squishy DynaComp sound if thats what you're after.
I'll be the first to admit that compressors can be a bit confusing to get dialed in on your first few attempts. I'm actually glad I started with the two-knob DynaComp. It makes it a little easier to dial in, since you don't have too many extra adjustments to confuse things. Then moving to the SuperComp was easy, cause I just set it the same as the DynaComp, and play with the Attack. Instantly found settings superior to my DynaComp, and was very pleased with my new Pedal. If its your first compressor, maybe try the DynaComp. But it makes a great upgrade from the DynaComp and a lot of other tonesucking compressors out there. Two thumbs up to MXR for this one.

tone sucker! 'hardwire bypass', not true bypass

I originally purchased a compressor to add sustain to my country chicken-pickin' leads, and to make the notes in chords hold in a bit longer. I initially was very happy with this pedal. The attack knob adds a ton of versatility and it eliminates some of the 'poppy, clickiness' that dyna comps are known for. It essentially allowed the compressor to sound more tranparent, although it could sound like a dyna comp when needed. There are better sounding, more transparent compressors out there, but for the price I was very content with the pedal. Unfortunately, after a while I noticed that this pedal was hugely sucking the tone from my signal when it was disengaged. When the pedal was disengaged, my tone was sterile and anemic, and horrible. When I took the pedal out of my board, the 'sterileness' was gone. Then I looked it up and found out that this pedal is 'true hardwire bypass', not true bypass as I had been tricked into believing. For the value, the pedal is good. But for me, it's way too much of a tone sucker. I am going with a high end true-bypass boutique compressor.

I just received my new MXR Super Comp today. This is my first compressor, but I've read up on and experimented with a few others. This has a great sound to it. It's not as transparent as some of the higher-end botique models, so you can hear some change in the tone. However, this is still a GREAT compressor. I LOVE IT. It's MXR, so you know you're getting a great product. If you need a great compressor for a good price, but it.

Questionable

I bought this in the hopes of improving my country sound, unfortunately this is the first compressor I have ever bought, and it doesn't really do anything but give me a more percussive attack. I do beleive the problem is that I am not educated in the proper use of the pedal, so am not ready to give up on it yet. If you don't know about compressors, get smartened up before you buy one, then you can make an educated buying decision.

I bought a Super Comp recently after doing a side by side comparison with a couple other compressors. It was hands down the best of the three, which included an MXR Dyna Comp and an EH Nano Soul Preacher. I have owned several compressors in the past, including a Boss CS-3. The Soul Preacher is just too noisy to gig with, and I wouldn't use one if it was given to me. The Dyna Comp is nice, but seemed to thin my tone too much. The Super Comp is incredibly well made, low noise, and extremely versatile. If it has a drawback, it is that it does alter your tone. I noticed unless I use a low attack, it thins the low-mids just a bit and as I increase the attack, you get a bit more airy sound and lose a tiny bit of bass. Now, all of this may be it actually evening out the response of my pickups/amp which kick out some bassy response anyway, it's subtle and hard to tell. I just keep the attack low and my tone is retained, and I don't reach for any EQ at all. I give it a 4.5 because there ARE better compressors out there--just not for the money. It outperforms most everything under $150. Stacks up against the Maxon CP101 given the Super Comps versatility and amount of variation you can get out of it. To get better, you have to shell out for something with tubes, like an EH Black Finger or Vox Snake Charmer (both which I like, but was on a budget when I was shopping--needed the saved cash for my power amp). I play a lot of different stuff, but I needed something suitable for tight industrial riffing; with some noise gates (I plug guitar into the first gate set very, very light to just kill string/finger noise and hum from lights, etc...what gets through hits the Super Comp and onto some tube goodness) and the Super Comp, I can feel good knowing I can chop riffs all to hell with brutal battle axe goodness and not lose all the vibe and character of my tone.
