Left-facing Right-facing Toe Twiddlers

The MXR Blue Box takes your guitar signal, fuzzes it up, then duplicates it two octaves down. You control the output and the mix between the dry signal and the effect. Using it 100% wet is quite an experience, but more recognizable sounds appear as you dial in more dry signal. The Blue Box is known for having a chaotic personality that can make each session a totally unique experience!

Here are just some of the people who are using this box: John 5 - Rob Zombie, Mick Thompson - Slipknot, Munky - Korn, Jimmy Page, Tim Skold - Marilyn Manson, Jay Baumgardner - Producer Zakk Wylde, Geordie White - A Perfect Circle

MXR M-103 Blue Box Features:

  • Power: Single 9 volt battery or Dunlop ECB-002 AC adapter

Controls: Footswitch toggles effect on/bypass (red LED indicates on)
  • Output knob sets total output gain
  • Blend knob adjusts ratio of dry (clean) with wet (effects) signal

Works for me

Works for me, maybe not for you. If you want an octave pedal to wank a sweet solo with, look elsewhere. If you want to make some awesome low end noise, than buy this pedal (price is right if you ask me). The practical applications for this pedal are very limited, a guitar often sounds very glitchy coming through it. I use this pedal in a feedback loop to get really disgusting lows. This pedal is also very cool with triggered drums. one complaint it volume loss. The volume loss can be somewhat remedied with a boost pedal or an easy mod, you're definitely going to lose SOME volume though.

Could be fun toy for some people in some situations. This is due to the fact that it's effects are VERY specific --- in fact, even after setting up an effect it will only be usable on higher or lower octaves based depending on how one decides to set it up. Also because the player may only play one note at a time it may not be that useful very often --- even on solos. This is a pretty squirrely device to be sure, even frustrating, but one that Jimmy Page used on a couple of songs --- so it could have value within certain situations.

Get ready to go through a crazy fuzz warp zone. This pedal's output volume will always decrease sustain but not to worry just get a distortion/overdrive pedal and run it though for "better results." The Blue Box is not good for rhythm/strumming. Turning it counter clockwise you are in an Atari word.

I was expecting something good from MXR. This thing has a significant volume drop. Even with the mods, the volume loss is still pretty bad. MXR is no good for octave FX. Stick with Electro Harmonix when it comes to Octave and Shifting. There's very little usable tones you can get from this pedal. Not even half of the tone knob is usable (maybe 1/4). I'm just trying to warn people about the claims of this pedal. This pedal is garbage. Sure they say so-and-so from this band uses it. But they pay him to use it, and it's not the same pedal you'll be buying. Those musicians have everything customed.

Well I just picked one up last week and yeah I have to say it definitely aint a regular octave fuzz.. Bought it after reading Scott Kelly of Neurosis uses one. For what though I dont know now.

The tracking is rather wierd and decides when it wants to work and doesnt.. The fuzz by itself sounds pretty decent and its great for making video game noises and wierd low end drones (Im tuned to A so the double octave down is kinda neat).. Gotta keep playing with it but I think its gonna fit in nicely as I was looking for something new and odd to make 'noises' with.

The Blend knob does not mix between clean and fuzz tones.. It mixes between the octave and the fuzz signal. No matter what, this pedal is not clean. Its a fuzz with a wierd octave effect and the fuzz is always on no matter what. All the way to the left its pure octave, all the way to the right is all fuzz. I keep mine somewhere around 2-3:00 and its perfect for Univox Superfuzz tasting octave sounds. Move it a little more towards 12:00 though and the chaos of the Blue Box starts to take over.
