Bought without playing and am honestly disappointed! This thing does not sound like any of the guitars it is suppose to model. In fact, it's the worst sounding acoustic electric I've ever heard. I've had it four years, tinkered, adjusted and gave it the benefit of the doubt..but no go. I have an old washburn acoustic that puts it to shame. Frets are too small and intonation is awful. I could not recommend this ax to anyone. This is the first guitar I've purchased that I have been disappointed with and the only one I've given a bad review. All other Line 6 products have been exceptional and I own 2 of their amps..Vetta II & Flextone III XL. Both amps are great!!

I bought this and fell in love with it, it met all that I thought a modeling guitar would be. First and foremost, this is NOT real guitar. To get the most out of this bad boy you will need work bench, and run through another Line 6 product, the POD will offer phantom power. If you want to run mono lines the models still sound a bit off, running through the POD or offered box, you can run balanced XLR which gives a great sound. However I would suggest using a capo, the alternate tuning is a great deal. Over all love it, but still miss a real acoustic.

if you havent played alot of the acoustics this is modelling you will enjoy the sound of it at first, but so many things allow this guitar to fail. For 1 this feels nothing like an acoustic, it has the body shape of an acoustic from front view, but is very thin and completely solid like an electric guitar. Second, it lacks the clarity of a real acoustic guitar, if you strike hard you really bring the digital processed sound right out in front. Third, you need a power adapter to plug it in to anything, no camp fire use unless you plan on also bringing an amp near the fire.
Fourth, it lacks midrange whatsoever, even with the mic placement eq setting, when in the mix all you can really hear is the highs and thats it.
in these pictures you see a soundhole but its pointless being there because that sound hole is 1 1/2 inches deep the rest of the body is completely solid, losing the warm feeling and clarity of a real acoustic.
Overall fun at first, but stick a real acoustic in your hands and you might realise you paid too much for a solid body electric guitar pretending to be an acoustic...which it is not whatsoever!

Not Great........

I was excited to have one. This guitar was not for me though. I did not think the tones of the acoustic guitars that are programmed in sound anything close to having the warmth and presence of their namesakes.
As an acoustic performer I expect and need the sound and response that you get from the body of the instrument. The Variax is not able to duplicate this. You cannot create dynamics on the Variax that you can on actual acoustic instrument.
The action on this guitar was out of sight though and I hated to let it go for that reason. I could really run up and down the neck. The guitar was well put together too.
If you have read about the Variax, are a serious working musician and are wondering if all of the things you have read about the Variax 700 are too good to be true.........unfortunatley they are. You are better off with a great sounding acoustic/electric. I sent mine back.

Get The Workbench With It

The Variax Acoustic 700 is the best solution for guitarists that use multiple open (alternative) tunings. Instead of bring 3 guitars to a gig, I can now bring the Variax.
The construction of the guitar is good and, suprisingly, very playable right out of the box. It has a weight closer to a solid body electric than an acoustic, which is logical because of the body IS essentially solid. One negative: the soundhole on both sides near the fretboard was either not finished or was rubbed off. It's bare wood. Why? I don't know.
The modeled guitars (and other string instruments)are very good. The built in compressor and mic placement control yields enough initial variation for you to get sound that you want w/o feedback. The guitar tracks incredibly well. One thing, make sure your amp or PA is loud enough so can't hear the strings when playing open tunings.
The built in open tunings sound good and, although there are many, there wasn't one for open G (which I play a great deal). So, I bought the Variax Workbench and I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone buy a Variax Acoustic 700.
Once set up with all the updates/downloads (one negative is the enclosed Workbench software does not include the acoustic software and a download was necessary), editing the sounds and open tunings in the Workbench is very intuitive and easy. You can edit the a variety of parameters including individual open tunings, save to your PC or Mac and sync with your Variax.
The workbench is, if not a must, a well worth addition to the Variax Acoustic 700.
