Great Amp

First off, if you want to buy this amp because of the cool amplifier simulations, you're going to be seriously disappointed. They're absolutely no good. However, overall this amp is awesome. I don't really use too many of the effects on it, but this amp really does have good flange, chorus and overdrive. The clean channel is also super clean, even at high volumes. This thing is really sweet. However, I would not buy the Flextone with 1 12" speaker because it's just not loud enough. Spend the extra $100 and buy the 2X12. You won't regret it. I would also recommend buying the FBV Express foot pedal with it, so you can change the channels with your foot.

The plain and simple key to this amp is replace the stock speaker with an Eminence Red Coat Private Jack and add compressor or tube preamp in the effects loop and you will have the best sounding performance / Practice amp you can buy at this price. You also get the full gamut of effects and modeling capabilities. Don't be fooled by technology deficient tube junkies. In a blind folded test 90% would pick the Flextone hands down.

I am a hardcore tube amp enthusiast and have never really used anything else. There used to be no comparison between solid state amps and tube amps even with the advent of digital modeling. In the last few years though the whole modeling thing has gotten to a point where the amps actually sound good. If you know what I'm talking about there is a "glassy" sound that tube amps produce when they distort. This amp has that sound. the Fender models sound like Fenders, The Marshalls sound like Marshalls and so on. Personally, I bought it for the versatility which is the amps strongest point in my opinion.

Once I learned to program through my computer and plug in a short board, I couldn't ask for capability. There are two additions I would recommend to all. I change the L6 speaker to a Mesa Boogie Black Shadow and it was a big plus for me. The other is to plug a Boss Compressor into the effects loop and leave it in back turned on. Kick it in and out with your short board and you won't believe what it will do for you lead solos. Tube Science will soon become more of a fad than a reality.

I got this amp for $1000 NZ a year ago but sold it recently to get an iMac and because I wanted to upgrade to a stack or a tube 2x12 combo anyway. Out of the box it was totally fine, looked awesomely stylish and at lower volumes especially, it emulated the selected cabinets and amps really well. The problem I had was that when cranked up and competing with my band mate's 2x12 150 watt Marshall AVT, I ended up getting drowned out even at similar volumes, especially in the middle of intense prog metal jams. The effects were all good also but again at higher volumes they just didn't come through and got lost. Could be we just play too loud but personally I found this amp to be a fantastic bedroom amp, but not such a great gigging amp. I'm guessing the 150 watter packs a lot more punch so that could be an option for those wanting the features and the volume.
