The Koch Studiotone Combo Amp is an amazing all-tube guitar amplifier, which can do a lot more than just studio work. This compact power combo sounds bigger than one might suspect and is fully stage worthy. Its 3 channels instantly provide a wide variety of tones. The power amplifier is equipped with two EL84s in class-A and has an "old VOX like," open, sparkling, yet warm tube sound. Especially when overdriven, the musical saturation of the EL84s create unique overtones and harmonics. The STUDIOTONE's 3 channels can be selected on the front panel or remotely switched with the included FS2-ST footswitch.

The Clean channel is warm with a rich and sweet clarity useable for any music style. The Overdrive+ channel provides killer lead sounds and its rich and musical distortion will give you an incredible singing tone with natural harmonics and great definition. In order to give you more tone options, the STUDIOTONE has two Voicing switches added to the 3 already powerful tone controls, which influence the tone of all 3 channels. The 2-way "Mid Shift" switch enables you to boost the mid frequencies around 800Hz for a better tone definition. The 3-way "Bright" switch allows you to cut or boost the high frequencies for creating a warmer or brighter overall sound. The newly designed VG12-60 Koch speaker is extremely efficient and has deep and warm lows with enough highs for a twinkling clean sound. The 3 speaker output jacks (4, 8 and 16 ohms) enable you to hook up any speaker combination you can think of.

The most amazing features of the STUDIOTONE can be found on the back panel. First, the built-in Power Soak and the Speaker on/off switch enable you to play the STUDIOTONE at full volume and record it in silence, without driving your neighbors crazy. Second, the Recording output allows you to input your sound (as it comes from the speaker) directly into a mixing console or HD recording system while a speaker simulation filter simulates the sound of a microphone placed in front of the speaker. In order to give you extra voicing possibilities there are two switches, one for simulating a 1x12 or 4x12 cabinet, the other for selecting the place of the microphone, axis or off-axis. On top of that, a Line output without frequency compensation connects the STUDIOTONE, for example, to a rack mount power amp and a "To Clean channel" output with frequency compensation.

With this unique feature you can input your sound into any other guitar amp's Clean Channel for boosting your total volume without losing the unique sound of the STUDIOTONE. The Headphones output allows you to practice anywhere at any time. Last, but not least, the STUDIOTONE comes with great sounding Accutronics spring Reverb and an Effects Loop.

First of all, price.. with the falling dollar most imported brands are going to be more expensive. It is just like Fender was one of the most (if not the most) expensive brands to be purchased in england during the late 60's. The premium you pay has to be made up in the enjoyment of going a unique direction and having something different... if not ... you should just stick with the brands you feel are a better value.

Having said that, this Koch amp has plenty of unique features and tones to warrant paying a premium. This little guy is amazing in that it is so small but sounds so big... clean, the amp can produce a huge low warm tone that even my Marshall with a 412 can't produce. It is 80% Fender Bassman to me and 20% Mesa Mark IV to me. The input sensitivity is realatively low so the amp can handle overdrive pedals well.. which is what I like to do.. push the front end. On the gain side this little guy is definitely High Gain... I would say 70% Mesa Mark IV and 30% Marshall in quality.. very tight low end . The Koch speaker is amazing and can handle anything this amp can throw at it.. no were near farting out. The amp has a dummy load and the recorded tones are fantastic.. it is worth it alone for the direct recording feature... it also lets you use it with headphones...yes, an all tube amp with silent headphone capability (speaker switch is there for any combination of use). Very well built.

Like I've read the fact that you have to share the eq with 3 channels is really not too much of an impact if you're looking to use this in a band situation.. settings on the eq work well when switched between all three channels. I love the mid shift switch.. it really gives you more of a marshall plexi type tone.. I keep thinking Jimmy Page would love this guy.
