The Katana guitar pedal by Robert Keeley is a fat, harmonically rich boost. It operates in pure clean and high gain modes. With the speedo knob pushed in, it's a volume control that goes to 20. With the knob out, it's a cutting boost with just a touch of gritty edge.

MAYBE IF YOUR ON THE ROAD....

First of all, let me say that I think robert keeley is one of the best if not THE best effects guy in the business right now. That being said, I wasn't all that impressed with the clean boost. It does exactly what it says it does, and if that's what your looking for, by all means...

But for me, I play in my room or at a small local venue, and loudness really isn't the issue. Basically, this pedal is a volume boost, it's like paying a guy to make your amps go to 11. I'm returning it and getting the java boost, and from what I've heard and seen it's well worth the extra $. Get this if you have a million effects and a small amp or a large place to play, otherwise, just let your amp (which i'm sure is never cranked all the way up) and the pedals do their thing and save yourself the money....

Highest rated? Duh.

I now know why this pedal is the highest rated. I had to hear for myself. I got it today and immediately tried it. I played a Gibson Les Paul DC tuned down 1 whole step (DGCFAD) through a Fulltone ’69 then to the Katana. From the Katana to a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with a home made attenuator in the effects loop. What it does to the sound, is amazing. It pushes it up with a natural compression. Playing with the Fulltone ’69, I like to roll the volume down on the neck pickup to get a clean tone. The Katana gives this effect an even more crystal like clean sound. With the bridge pickup volume up and the speed knob on the Katana pulled, I get a wicked sick fuzz sound. I can’t imagine how good this will sound with a strat when I try it tomorrow. Get this pedal.

This pedal has got to be the king of boosts! It has become an indespensable part of my sound. It will give a pure clean boost if desired, but where this thing really shines is with the knob pulled for a touch of grit. This thing pushes my amp and pedals like nothing else. I use it first in my effects chain and drive it with my Strat. I am amazed with this pedal every time I play, and hardly ever shut it off. Just a bit pricey, but just look inside it and see the point to point wiring, plug it in and listen to it and realize the value in this gem!

Incredible booster pedal

What can I say about the Keeley Katana boost other than "wow?" The JFET circuits let this pedal get loud and stay clean. It has added the sparkle back into my clean playing, and with the twist of the volume control, I can get a hint of overdriven grit from my amp. Note, like any booster, your amp should be near natural OD to maximize the pedal's effectiveness. With the knob out, the pedal functions like a great OD pedal. However, rolling the knob w/your foot doesn't work too well.

This is the best boost I have ever used ! I use it first in my effect chain driving a Carvin Nomad with a strat, mostly, And I also use with a Les Paul with P90's. I like the knob pulled out for a very very slight break-up. This thing is pure tone! It adds a dimention to my sound that I love without any extra compression. For me this is the perfect boost, a bit pricy but worth every penny. Robert makes some awesome stuff!
