Jose Ramirez S1: Excellent Value

I have been playing for many years and rarely, in this price range, do you find a guitar that has this sort of presence of quality in build and sound upon immediate presentation.

The sound is balanced with well defined highs and mids. The bass is clearly present without being overbearing. Flaws - few and far between - require very serious and lengthy inspection (at least in the one I picked up). Additionally, the instrument is very comfortable to play.

Although I suspect a professional Classical Guitarist would want better - that could probably not be found for less than at least twice the price here.

This is a very attractive guitar. I can find no construction flaws whatsoever, and the finish is perfect.

It appears that Ramirez has cut costs on this one by omitting any fretboard inlays or markers, and by the choice of the spruce top. It is German spruce, and mine has some figuring in both pieces that are not structurally significant, but unattractive. The annuals do not indicate baby spruce, but certainly not an elderly selection, either. The guitar is aged two years or so, thanks Ramirez.

The Mangoy sides and back are perfect, without flaw. No fills. The inside is unfinished, appropriately.

The guitar has an extremely uniform volume and tone across its range, and is quite full. There is no buzzing, no stray overtones, no accidental harmonics or sympathetic tonal problems that I can find. It seems to be fretted perfectly (but they all should be, in this day of mathematically precise machines).

It is a great entry level instrument at this price; the bottom end of a top-end line. My only objection is the figuring in the spruce top; I may yet ask to replace it for that reason alone.

And, of course, it has that wonderful "cigar-box" smell of woods.

I would buy it again, in a minute.

This has got to be one of the best values out there. Easy to play with great tone! It looks great, too. It's got a gorgeous spruce top, exotic and beautiful back and sides (some African hardwood). I would recommend this guitar to anyone. It think it's one of the newer models.
