JT HAWK 12

I wanted a 12 string electric for recording applications. I was either using a mic or a sound hole pickup with a high end 12 string acoustic. I had difficulty getting the sound I wanted. I shopped around and decided that I wanted a solid body electric. I did not want to spend a lot on a "specialty guitar. The Jay Turser JT-Hawk was inexpensive and had a good sound. It is not a flashy guitar and it was made in my least favorite country of manufacture, but it filled the bill for cost, sound and playability. Overall it seems to be a solid guitar, that should hold up. The coil tap pickups let you get a Byrds sound and can also capture a Led Zep feel. It is not perfect but a very good guitar especially for an inexpensive item. I think I will eventually change out the tuners, they are functional and fairly smooth but not Grover or Schaller quality. The PU are pretty darn good, If you are looking for a Ric sound they get close, and close again to a SG 12 string sound. The two volume knobs have a significant drop off about the 1/2 way point. The neck is a wee bit wider than I expected but, for finger picking this could be a positive. The back of the neck seems to be unfinished. This could cause problems if the neck was not cured properly. I have had issues with lower end guitars necks twisting after a year or so because they were improperly cured. With Chinese products you seem to get what you inspect not what you expect. I will have to wait and see if Jay Turser inspects the Chinese factory or not. Set up is good, not great.

Great 12-string for the price

I bought a red JT-Hawk online. I was a bit leery about buying a guitar without playing first, but I am very happy with this purchase. The finish is solid. The action and setup are really good, and the intonation is decent for a guitar of this price. You can get a nice variety of sounds out of the dual pickups and the coil tap switch. The scale is the same length as my Les Paul, though the neck is a bit wider. There's only a few shortcomings I can note: the cutaway body to 24 frets is a bit unnecessary in a 12-string and it makes the instrument a bit neck-heavy, the linear volume knob doesn't give an even volume increase from zero to full (I usually leave my guitar volume all the way up anyway), and the tuning keys are a bit rough in a few places, but are fully functional and keep the instrument solidly in tune. Overall, this is a great guitar for the money.

Jay Turser guitars are good quality value-priced guitars. If you've never heard of them, try one. You'll be glad you did! I bought this because I have small hands and couldn't play an acoustic 12-string guitar that well. This one plays like a dream after a minimum of set-up. And you can't beat the price!!
