Designed for the player who is looking for a completely new and different voice, the EWN28KOENT Cutaway Nylon String Acoustic-Electric features a body that's smaller in size and shallower in depth for increased comfort and acoustic projection. With a narrow neck width the EWN28KOENT is perfect for player who find typical classical guitar necks too wide and the soft cutaway provides complete fretboard access. Aesthetic appointments include luscious koa wood top, back & sides, a beautiful laser engraved wood rosette, mahogany binding, gold open gear tuning machines, and rosewood bridge and fingerboard. You won't find anything else quite like the Ibanez EW guitars even among guitars that are much more expensive.

The EWN28KOENT is fully equipped for both acoustic and electric performance with an ultra thin B-Band® UST (under-the-saddle) pickup and the Ibanez SRTn Preamp. The B-Band® UST pickup has a wide dynamic range and reproduces original tones without affecting the instrument acoustically. The SRTn's notch filter-equipped feedback reduction system allows high loud sound levels before feedback. Control adjustments are simple and easy to use, and tuning is a snap thanks to the onboard tuner. The G200ECENT has a 1/4" output jack, and a balanced XLR jack for direct PA connection. Operates on standard AA batteries.

Experience matters

This is my first classical. This neck width is less than most, which I needed. Over all, the guitar is okay. Mine has a buzzing from the inside that is cured by pulling the battery slide out and re-inserting it. The on-board tuner will not recognize the high E string most of the time. I have had trouble finding the right strings to make it sound good unplugged as well as plugged in. Get a good amp too, I didn't.

Excellent Performing Guitar

Okay...I did not give the guitar all 5s. The reason for this is simple--this is not an all-around awesome guitar. It is great for performing because it looks beautiful and the plugged-in sound is the best I have heard out of any nylon string (it seems to be harder to get nylons to sound good in a PA than steel strings...at least in my experience :P). However, the construction quality is decent at best...the guitar does the job, but the construction is not as high quality as the epiphone masterbilt guitars, which are in a similar price range. Also, the acoustic sound is almost non-existant. If you're recording with a microphone, or need a guitar that resonates acoustically, look elsewhere. However, this is a great guitar for working musicians who need a durable, affordable, and good looking guitar that responds well to PA systems.

Beautiful Wood, Nice Axe

The Ibanez EW Series EWN28KOENT Cutaway Nylon String Acoustic-Electric Guitar is a strikingly beautiful guitar. I have 2 other more traditional classical guitars and was looking for something that could be used as a steel string replacement. This fits the bill. What first sold me on this guitar is it’s looks, especially the Koa wood body. Ibanez makes a couple of other Exotic Wood Classicals, which are cheaper than this one, but I liked the look of this wood better, even though I was just comparing them through pictures online. I am very happy with my decision. The neck is a tad narrower at the nut than a traditional classical and the upper part of the body meets the neck at the 14th fret instead of the 12th at the low E string. The cutaway side gives full access to all the frets. Acoustically it does not produce the volume of a traditional classical because of it thinner body but it does not have to be plugged in to be heard. The acoustic tone is very good. Through an amp it has all the volume you could want, and good tone. When I got it, the action was so low that I put a shim under the saddle to raise it a little. It came with 2 saddle shims and an additional saddle. Because of my bad back I practice sometimes laying on my back. When in this position the guitar was producing a buzzing from inside the body. After much fiddling with it I discovered it was the slide out pre-amp battery holder. I removed it and re-inserted it and the buzz went away and didn’t return. The only thing I don’t like about the guitar are the cheap tuning machines. The gears don’t feel tight and it’s a little difficult (not impossible) to get it into perfect tune. I plan to upgrade them at some point. This is a guitar that could be used for all styles of acoustic music. And it is uniquely beautiful.

Ibanez acoustic

Mine arrived pre-dinged, with a small chip missing from the body edge at the cutaway... small but there it is. Not enough to make me send it back. BUT, I am having a lot of fret buzz at the third fret (sounds like one of the other reviewers, eh?) and am working on that, bringing it to a local luthier tomorrow. How is the bridge saddle supposed to be placed? Maybe mine is backwards too, but the intonation on the guitar is excellent. The string action is great (as long as I can fix the buzz problem...) The electronics are amazing, and I was able to play the thing at rather high volumes without it feeding back, and when it did, I used the notch control to control the resonance, and it did the job! The three band EQ (bass, mid, treble) is VERY effective, and creates a huge range of tone. The on-board tuner is a great idea, and it works like a charm. Beautiful wood. Nice neck. Very playable. Wish me luck with the fret buzz though. It does look as if the 3rd fret may have risen a bit from the neck. Hmmmm.

Nice woodwork but...

To fully qualify this review I have to say that this was scratch n' dent item. I can find only one thing in the finish that might have been considered a flaw and it's so small and hidden I doubt that anyone outside of a purist would find it. The woodworking and detail is first class. BUT... on delivery I found the rpoduct had a pronounced buzz on 4 strings. A closer inspection showed that the saddle had been installed backwards, causing the taper to face the nut. A reverse of the saddle fixed the buzz. Then I plugged it in. The jack was extremely loose internally and caused a persistent disconnect as the plug wiggled against the loose contacts. Quick surgery to remove the connection module and bend the contacts inward solved that issue. I am very happy with the amplified sound. The acoustic sound is shallow as one would expect from a thin body. This instrument is best on stage through an amp or sound system. Playability and intonation are great.
