Highly Overated

This guitar is very overated this is my sons first guitar from his grandmother, the actual size is perfect for a child and looks are fabulous, but the action is terrible and sounds as if it were made by Fisher Price.I've seen guitars for cheap 5 times better than this one just not as small, the problem is I love many Ibanez Guitars but this isn't one of them,Try One before you buy one

Small-Potent-Portable!
Posted by That Man's got a Guitar from Manchester, NH-USA on Nov 12, 2006
Experience w/product: I own it
Reviewer's Background: I guess
Reviewer's Play Style: I will play anything but I'm terrible at Jazz
I bought mine in '99 or thereabouts...I had been using a Martin "backpacker" for ease of transport but found this lil' blue Ibanez was much more comfortable and had a much better tone. Action and appointments are very good and the built-in electronics with 2-band passive EQ was very impressive. After a couple months and changing to .011 guage "medium" accoustic DR strings it really came "alive"--which makes sense-on a short-scale instument a heavier string will have more tension on it tuned to concert pitch and it bumped up the sound and playing quality a solid 2 notches. It was then that I happened past an open mic night and, having a free evening, stopped in and played a quick little set. EVERY other player wanted to check out the lil Baby Blue and most couldn't believe that aside from the heavier strings it was a stock factory Ibanez. This is not a cheap "toy" guitar-it is a small, economical, well-thought and designed instument. Women seemed especially entranced by it's small size and releived that it's full-featured. Yes, there are volume problems with your low-"e" string--not due it's pricepoint but rather the physics of it's size-how often do you find 5" Bass speakers? Something I've done a few times is to replace the low "E" with a high "e" (shimming the nut slot with a paper match) which makes for a very pleasent "ringy-zingy" sound. All-in-all whether playing the forest, the parking lot or the local stages a fantastic and versatile instrument that makes up in character and availability (why leave it home? It's small and light and can be strummed through red lights...) any flaws it's performace has when (unfairly) compared to full-size instuments. Action was fine "out of the box" and aside from expected maintenence chores, restringing and cleaning, has weathered life in New England well for over 5 years. I strongly suggest that unless you're an absolute beginner (and probaly even then) that you bump up the string guage a notch or two to provide better tension and intonation-not to say 009s and 010 sets don't work-they do, but not a well (to my ears at least) as 011s. I haven't gone to 012 sets because it didn't seem to need to go heavier. But enough reading-try one out-you won't regret it and will probably find that having a "guit-box" you can bring almost anywhere will allow you to play more and ultimately make YOU a better player.

Best Travel Guitar Out There!!!

Brought it with me to Shanghai, China and Hawaii. It fits in the overhead compartment, no problem. The little thing sounds great and it rivals my Ovation CS257. The only thing I can complain about it is the weak low E string, but given its small size, oh well. I'd give it 9 1/2 star.

Little sweet suprise

I have had mine for a couple years. It just gets better with age on the tone. I had it setup by a luthier when I first got it so it plays sweet. Looks good sounds good amped or without. It is just plain handy for playing anywhere and has been a little sweet suprise over the years.
