Natural Cherry Sunburst

The Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar covers all genres from blues/rock to jazz/fusion and back again. With an arched, flamed maple body, its looks are as sweet as its tone. Two Hagstrom humbuckers, combined with the resonant semi-hollow body, provide plenty of power. And no Hagstrom is complete without their famous, fast-playing neck. The Viking has the patented H-Expander truss rod which provides tension at either end and runs the entire length of the neck. The rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for very low action and a thin set maple neck.

Another Hagstrom exclusive, the resinator fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. It offers the articulate sound of high-quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast.

The self-lubricating graphite composite nut is much harder than bone or plastic resulting in more string vibration through the neck. Tuning is also improved and string binding is eliminated by self-lubrication.

A long travel tune-o-matic-style bridge and trapeze tailpiece further increase tone, sustain, and intonation quality. 18:1 gear ratio machine heads ensure fully accurate tuning.

The Viking's high-grade polyester finish is hard, smooth, and more dense than polyurethane, so its guaranteed to look great and provide excellent protection and sonic performance.

I'm reaching for my Hagstrom instead of my Gibson.

I am primarily motivated to write this review to exclaim my astonishment at the versatility of this guitar. It's obviously great for jazz and blues, but also does rock, hard rock, and yes, EVEN METAL incredibly well. The guitar produces noticeable feedback at high-gain levels, but it is controllable and actually quite musical sounding. The fit and finish on the Viking Deluxe is really top-notch. I recommend that you seriously consider one of these before buying much more expensive semi-hollow bodies. Also, I own a white Viking Deluxe, although white doesn't seem to be an option here, which is strange.

My favorite guitar hands down...

I like to play blues and blues-rock. This guitar is really something. The neck plays real smooth and I love the fingerboard (silky!). Other then that, the stock pickups are actually decent. They play real nice on clean, very melodic. With gain, it was alright but I like my blues to be a little more dirtier and hotter so I swapped them for some seymour pups. The seymours are definately hotter on gain and works exceptionally well with this guitar, but the clean on the seymours imho isn't as "full" as the stock pickups (they are a little thin in general). Maybe my memory is joggled, but I'm pretty sure I liked the clean more on the stock pups so other words, yah this guitar really isn't too shabby right out of the box. Great finish too but you can see some traces of the wiring thru the f-holes (not a big deal but still). All-in-all, this guitar rocks especially if you wanna do the blues!

Hagstrom Viking Deluxe

Have had this guitar almost a year now. Usually play a '74 Strat, but was looking for that deep bluesy sound, since that is what has become an exclusive genre of late. This guitar is really very, very good on all counts. After some initial adjustments (toggle switch was quite loose, as was the cord plug) it played very nicely and showed incredible not ebending ability and ease of neck positioning for chords and lead runs. Took it with me on January '08 Bluescruise, in hard case, checked it on airline, and luggage on ship - barely needed to be re-tuned, it held like a charm. Played on cruise and this baby held it's own with all the strats, gibsons, and myraid others that made their appearance on board. The tone was deep and dirty when needed, and when I wanted an edge a flick of the toggle and it scratched out some nasty bits of sound that totally surprised many on board. Most wonderful is the neck, it's composite make up is so great for vibrating notes al la B.B.King, or for super serious bending it is a joy to work with. I'd highly recommend the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe to anyone who wants a solid, good priced guitar for almosts any kind of music genre. Oh yeh it looks so damn sweet peopel are always commenting on it too - which doesn't hurt either.

After all this time - a Hag for me

Back when I made my living playing in a band, a Fender Wildwood Coranado II was my main play, and I played a Hag way back then too but never thought much about it because I was too young to appreciate quality over opinion. I have the Sunburst Viking and I consider it the best player guitar there ever was. All your claims are on the mark and I only wish I had played one earlier in my career. The neck is too fast and if you do not pay attention, you can easily overshoot your mark. Played it on a Micro Cube mini amp first and love the enghanced DSP, and the guitar sounds perfect through Fender's Acoustonic DSP - Country , rock, blues, all enhanced music from this Axe - you have to get one, you'll love it. For a hummbucker, the pickups do a good job presenting a satisfying sound too. But don't get one becuase I really like this Hag - try one for yourself - guaranteed to be hooked and will not want to put it down.

Cherryburst Viking Deluxe

I am a hobbyist guitar player, as well as a hobbyist guitar re-builder/re-finisher, and I purchased a Viking Deluxe in their cherryburst finish, and I am very happy with my purchase.

The finish looks really good and has a warm, rich look to it. It did have a few (barely noticeable) over-spray marks, but I am very "type-A" when it comes to inspecting stuff like that, so I bet the average guitarist wouldn't even notice. Along with the art-deco tuning keys, very clean inlay work, and that great tail piece makes for one sexy looking guitar.

After I did an initial set-up (neck had slight bow-down, and I love an arrow-straight neck), the only problem I came across was the saddle at the G string. I ran out of adjusting room and I'm going to have to reverse the saddle in order to get my G string perfectly intonated, but the rest of the strings intonated very quickly. The neck has a 12" radius and the saddles matched this perfectly, though, so that was nice. After all is said and done, though, the guitar feels and plays great.

I LOVE the way this guitar sounds! Clean, dirty, neck pick-up, bridge pick-up, you'll get a pleasant tones in wide variety. It has a nice punchy sound to it, and is brighter than a lot of other semi-hollow body guitars, and I can tell this baby is going to stand out nicely in a mix.

I just might buy another Hagstrom (Deluxe F) because of this. You get a lot of class for the cash!
