The rockinest Gretsch in the Galaxy!!!

This was my 4th Gretsch I've ever owned and it's among the best if not the best one I've owned. Do not worry about radius mismatches. I use the stock bridge and it plays great. The guitar was actually setup well before I got it since I got it from a dealer that sets them up before you buy. The tone is gretsch, the look is too and so is the feel. I've played vintage instruments and the lacquer finish sure puts it above the poly finished gretsch's in my opinion. I have nothing else to say other than it's an awesome guitar and the trestle bracing helps you control the feedback. I can play jazz all the way up to hard rock if I wanted to. It handles multiple genres and is a great 16" size, which is easier to play than my country club. Buy it without worry!!! Sperzels also rule!!! They make string changes quick and easy. Buy one, you won't regret it!

Should be more guitar, for the bucks...

When I got the brand new intrument and played it for the first time in my living room I was very dissapointed about the setup. It was definitely the worst factory setup that I saw in 25 years.
The bridge did not match the radius of the fingerboard, that caused very bad fret buzzing.
The tuners were loose, some frets were higher than others, etc. etc.I think a guitar like that should actually not leave a factory ! I had to fix the problem spots and than it was o.k But if you pay this much for a guitar and you first have to fix it, than it drives you crazy... However, the sound is not bad at all and delievers that twang your lookin`for. First try the axe at your local dealer !!!

A Professional Guitar Tech Tells All

First a little about myself. I am a professional musician and luthier for 30 years and have professionally repaired and setup numerous guitars. I also have owned and played many Gretsch guitars, they have always been my favorite guitar. If you brought this guitar to a Professional Guitar Tech for evaluation on whether to "Buy it or Not", here is what he would say:
From the factory these Guitars are assembled with Mismatched Parts, specifically the Fretboard is a 9.5º radius and the Bridge is a 12º radius which means, if you set the strings up for normal playing, some strings will be higher off the fretboard than the the others. The fix for this is to replace the Bridge Saddles a have the saddles cut to a 9.5º radius. For your information Setzer replaces his entire bridge with a Gibson ABR-1 Bridge. Next.. The First thing that I saw when I opened the case, was that the strings were not correctly aligned over the Pickup Pole Pieces. After going to TV Jones' website and getting the spec's for their Classic Pickups both the Neck and the Bridge Pickup Pole pieces, did not match the Spec's from TV Jones. (The Pole Pieces were measured with Calipers accurate to 1000th of an inch) What does this mean? Either these are not TV Jones pickups or they are poorly made, and it will be difficult to make the strings align over the pole pieces. The Best Fix would be to Buy New Pickups from TV Jones Directly and install them. You do not need to replace the wiring harness it actually has Switch-Craft Parts and decent wire. If you don't want to replace the pickups you will have to remount them for the best alignment possible and re-cut the bridge saddles for the best possible spacing. Next.. The neck with the factory setup has Way to much relief. Guitar factories ship guitars out with plenty of relief so they can hang in music stores for a Year and not have any buzz when someone plays them. I Measured .035 of relief at the 5-6th fret. A Properly setup neck should have .002 to .000 of relief, because this is how much you will have to file off the frets to get them perfectly flat. So what does this mean? When you adjust the truss rod to remove the relief, more than likely you will need some fret work. I honestly have to say that this Factory Set-up is among the Poorest I've Ever Seen. Next .... The Nut should be re-cut or replaced depending on the other factors mentioned above. Next.... The Bigsby ... sounds like the "Wreck of the old 97'" coming down the track, with all it squeaking. Here's a simple fix. Lubricate all the moving parts with Vaseline and replace the Factory Washers with teflon washers about .030 thick. Silence is Golden! Next.. The Maple on this G6120SSLVO is probably AA Grade nothing fancy, like the Vintage 6120's are. Now for some Good News! The Body is built exceptionally well inside, and the paint job is awesome! How Does it Sound? The Pickups will instantly transport you to the 1950's and give you a Classic Vintage Sound. How Does Play? With the factory setup an experienced player will feel that something is not quite right, and the inexperienced player will eventually come to the same conclusion. The Bottom Line...If you want to spend $500 to $1000 for Parts and Labor, and make the above repairs, this guitar is PHENOMENAL !!! If you don't want to spend the cash, look for an old Chet Atkins Model... Like Setzer does.

Suprisingly great hard rocker

I was in guitar center one day and was just playing around, trying out different guitars. I picked up this one and the closest amp was a mesa boogie metal machine. I was curious what a rockabilly guitar would sound like juiced like metal machine, thinking it wouldnt sound so good. I was wrong. It was the clearest, most unique sound I've ever heard. This hollowbody just wailed on a "sad but true" tone and sounded like studio quality. I was so amazed I was considering selling all my equipment to afford it. The tremolo however was too stiff for my taste.

My wonderful wife just bought me my Setzer for my 30th. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever owned. Wonderful workmanship and a sound to die for, it is possible that this baby is going to the grave with me...and now I won't say where I will be burried.
