The Gitane DG-255 Selmer-Maccaferri Style Jazz Guitar is a toneful time machine. The overall looks and lines as well as the basic constuction is very pleasing, however there are a few things on my model I had to adjust. One was the action was way too high, and the strings starting breaking when I tuned then up. I put a better quality strings on, lowered the action to 5/64 at the 12th fret, but didn't check the frets(Oops! Should have done that). The last three frets at the end of the fingerboard are very high and cause the strings to buzz on all the other frets. Also the wolftones were very annoying. I added a piece of felt underneath the tailpiece and rubber string dampers behind the bridge which helped. If one is not a repairman or luthier the instrument you get might be a big headache. Luckily, I was able to adjust it to where it was a reasonably playable instrument. I didn't expect a Favino or a Dupont for the price, but felt all the extra work to bring the instrument up to snuff shouldn't have been necessary.

I prefer this guitar over archtops, it has a great classic vibe. I use it surprisingly for straight ahead jazz rather than gypsy jazz and it works just fine. I love the fact that it has a great acoustic sound that works really well electrified. My DG255 has had a tough life has many scratches and even a hole in the side ribs, its a hardy guitar though as it still plays really fine. I upgraded the tuners to gotoh, use argentines or similar. The sound has really opened up and it gets loads of remarks. As far as i know Saga based the design of this guitar on an original Selmer model #497. For the price you can't go wrong. Buy one now.

This guitar wowed me at first. Its sound, its playability, vibe, etc. were great until it started falling apart. The strings would deepen and strip the grooves on the bridge so the strings were slipping and sliding eveywhere. The moustache pieces on the end of the bridge (which were aparently set with elmers glue) fell right off. After a few repairs the bridge just keeled over and died. Everything else seemed fine. I guess replace the bridge if anything. That should cost you and extra hundred or so. Do yourself a favor, buy a Dupont. Better quality at about the same price as this guitar + repairs. Believe me.

I rated this guitar very highly because it is well made, and Gitane has really outdone themselves. I did not dock points, despite the fact that the phosphor bronze strings it comes with sound like crap. A nice set of Dell'Arte mediums gypsy strings, or John Pearse Nuages can really make the difference in its sound. You won't be disappointed with a simple string change. I'm buying the DG-500 next!

this nails the stunning loudness and soulful nasal tone that made the selmers so famous in the 30's! When i play along with Django records, i can't tell the difference in tone between his guitar and my own. This is an amazing instrument, and it is well worth the money.
