I don’t usually bother to contribute to reviews, but I do rely on them so I felt it only right that I add my opinion on this one. I was drawn to the Selmer Maccaferri style guitars early on, but to be honest I thought others might find them a bit too odd and gave me a hard time. After reading a lot of reviews I finally broke down and went and purchased a Gitane D-500 since it’s was both affordable and a phenomenal playing instrument. So to keep this simple, this is hands down my favorite axe, period end of discussion.

The first thing that impressed me about this guitar is the volume. Whenever I let someone try it out, the first word out of their mouth after they pluck the strings is "Wow". I can get way more tone and volume out of this guitar playing finger style than I could out of any of my old dreadnaughts even with a pick. With the wide neck and string spacing, this guitar is really well suited to finger style, but it responds beautifully if you're playing with a pick as well. It's very well made and the finish job is excellent. The joint between the neck and the body (with the cutaway) is a thing of beauty. Drawbacks: The cheapness of the tuning pegs and the thinness of the metal tailpiece, but as long as they don't break, I can't complain too much. My only real complaint would be the hard case that it came with. This guitar is pretty small, and the case seems to have been made for a bigger guitar. A t-shirt stuffed at the bottom of the case takes up the extra space so it's not a big deal. Just don't expect a custom fit.
Bottom line, if you ever plan on playing lead or fingerstyle on an acoustic, you need to try this guitar. I have not played anything that comes close in this price range.

I've had this D-500 for about a week now, long enough to sing its general praises. The appointments are cheap and need replacement. Otherwise... what a pleasure! The body and soundboard are very light, leading to the sharp attack and slightly nasal tone everyone comments about. The fingerboard is roomy, and this -- combined with the low string loading -- seems to invite new chord formations. This would seem to be a side-effect of the guitar's pedigree. I doubt if Maccaferri had seen more than a handful of American products when he designed the guitar, so his solutions for the problems of volume, clarity, and playability are quite different from those arrived at for the depression-era Epiphones, Gibson's, and Martins. In playing, the fingers respond accordingly. Selmer only made about 1,000 of its various models. So now a pre-global musical cul-de-sac has been reopened and made accessible via globalization. It is a strange world. But if you feel the yen, go ahead and buy this thing. It's a fun little axe.

I have had this guitar for two months now and it is (for me) the Holy Grail! I love tone, the loudness and the expressive of the strings. You can bend and stretch this guitar beyond that of other acoustics. I use for blues, classical, gospel and jazz and it works. The easiest playing guitar. You need one of these.

Finally! The guitar I have been looking for. All the Martins, Guilds, and various classical guitars were just a warm up to this guitar. For me this THE GUITAR. But then I started as a classical guitar player and then to steel strings and back to classical etc... I always wanted a guitar that was able to cover most fields of play and one that was expressive. At times you can make this thing sound almost like a violin. It came with the right silver wound gypsy strings. The action was dead on for me. I almost forget that I own other guitars. It will spoil you.
