Inspired by the 1960s SG Special, the Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups re-creates the look and sound of the most influential guitar in both Britain and the U.S. during the psychedelic era. It has the original all-mahogany body, dual P-90 pickups, and a bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays.

A Little SG History
In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that making the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

Great Guitar...Small problem

Feature wise... what more could you want? No "one" person needs anything more than 2 incredible P-90's each assigned with their own individual volume and tone controls. My initial fear in buying this guitar was that the neck would be too "chunky" or "beefy". Much to my surprise the neck is quite comfortable. The SG Classic certainly does not don the slimmer-tapered neck of the vintage late 60's SG's that this is modeled after but the SG Classic does not don the neck size you would routinely find on say... a Les Paul Studio either. I ran into a problem though... The fretwork was lacking considerably on the one I recently bought. The string spacing at the nut was a bit too wide or the fret edges were too rounded off? All I know is that when playing on the high "e" string every time I would do a pull-off or fret the string it would fall off the fingerboard!!! I cannot believe that this was let go through by quality control. I have since sent this back to Musician's Friend in the hopes that the replacement they send will be of much better quality.

I absolutely love this guitar. It is a mystery why Gibson does not install the old school P-90s on more guitars because they really sound great. The P-90s have a growl that you don’t get from Fender single coils but are brighter and a little cleaner than humbuckers. The SG Classic is, without a doubt, my favorite guitar for classic rock and Texas blues. It is the perfect complement to the darker, smoky sound of my SG Standard. OK, as a few people have noted, the P-90s do produce a hum noise that you don’t get from humbuckers. Maybe it really bothers some people but I got over it pretty quick. The bottom line is that this guitar rocks. Go check out some of the videos on YouTube (search “Gibson SG Classic”) if you want to hear how it sounds. Just don’t wait too long to buy one. After they are gone, you never know how long it will be before Gibson decides to make them again.

I've had my SG Classic for over a year now and I am very happy with it. I love that P-90 tone. There is lots of versatility in them pups. I like the thick neck and will never buy another thin neck guitar, but that's just a personal preference. Mine stays in tune even after lots of heavy playing. It's beautiful and the pics on MF's web site don't do the instrument justice.

I am only writing this review after reading the previous one. First off, I believe this is one of the best values that Gibson offers. The quality and workmanship are superb. The previous reviewer stated that the guitar had a bad odor and that the neck was sticky. For those of you who know about lacquer finishes, it takes a while for lacquer to fully cure. I had the same issue with a Fender 62 reissue strat. Now that these guitars are a few years old, I have no problems with the sticky feeling necks. For the price, if you can get a lacquered finish guitar, that is a bargain. Perhaps the previous reviewer may have received a lemon out of the batch, I don't know, but the one I received is the best guitar in my quiver and I have other Gibsons. You can buy the VOS SG with the wraparound bride, but it's gonna cost you a heck of a lot more doe.

I had an original back in '69, although mine was equiped with a wrap around bridge that added to the sustain.( I can't believe that Townshend was tossing these into the audience way back in the day!). I bought this particuar guitar through musician's friend a few years back. The laquer coating had a very strong odor, and the neck itself had a sticky feel to it. The sound was very dark, and the hum is something you can tolerate if the guitar is outstanding tone wise. I sent it back, even at that low price, because the neck was like a baseball bat, the frets were sharp,it didn't stay in tune,and the tonewas just not there. I own a TV Yellow USA Hamer P-90 Special, and it is far superior to this SG. If you want a great P-90 guitar, and have the cash, pick up a Gibson SG Special P-90 VOS with wrap-around bridge.
