Glamour Angle

Gibson USA's Guitar of the Month for November 2008, the Longhorn Double-cutaway in Trans Blue, has a body design that consists of slightly extended, asymmetrical cutaways on a solid piece of mahogany topped with an AA figured maple top.

White three-ply binding around the body and a traditional headstock add both beauty and protection to this electric guitar. And the improvements don't end there. A pair of EMG-85 active humbuckers deliver tone, power, and performance for any style of music, while the L.R. Baggs electronics offer separate outputs for both the piezo and the humbuckers. This gives players the option of either blending the two sounds or using them individually, thus allowing guitarists all types of sonic possibilities.

The neck is one-piece mahogany with Gibson's traditional '50s rounded profile, topped by an ebony fingerboard with white acrylic small-block fretboard inlays created especially for the Longhorn. Also in keeping with tradition is the headstock's flowerpot inlay, which dates back to the early 1900s and several of Gibson's historic mandolins and archtops. The Gibson USA Longhorn guitar is available only in Trans Blue finish. Production is limited to just 1,000 instruments.

I was very surprised how good this guitar sounds. It`s a tone monster. You can get every sound from blues over Jazz to screaming heavy metal. There are so many sound possibilities by blending the piezo pickup with the emg´s. A very good buy for the money and only 1000 were made.

This is a beautiful looking and extremely versatile guitar. The blue is much darker looking - at night it looks black. It's much lighter than Les Paul and not an archtop. The pickups sound beautiful to me. You can get anything from jazz to heavily sustained leads through a good amp. I get very close to John's Rick grinding on All My Loving. I lean towards Gibsons in general. I was planning on getting a 335 but was intrigued by the double cutaway and the acoustic pickup (which sounds so close to the Hummingbird plugged in my amp). Get it while supplies last, you won't regret it. The pots were screwed with uneven height, and upon close examination the lacquer on the neck joint was uneven (unlike on Les Paul), hence markdown on quality.
