Better than expected

I bought this guitar hoping to get the P-90 sound without the hum. As it turns out, the hum canceling on my guitar is not what I had hoped for but that's where the disappointment ends. This guitar has excellent tone, is perfectly balanced and (with a chambered body) is lighter than a "normal" Les Paul. I found that at lower amp gain settings it gets a very good Jazz tone from the neck pickup. At high amp gain, the bridge pickup is an absolute tone-monster, lots of squeaky and growl. The "side of thumb" harmonics really come through well and is has gobs of sustain (more than humbuckers actually). Then I accidentally discovered that the tone knobs are push-pull pots that split the coils! WOW! Even more versatility. While I didn't get what I hoped for, I ended up getting more than I expected. This sounds totally different from all my other Les Pauls, it's a keeper for sure!

I was drawn to this guitar of the week (#14) due to it's amazing Iced Tea Burst finish and antique bindings. Plugged into a simple Blues Jr. it produces sweet blues, growling rock or punching rock tones due to the unique H90 pups. You tap the coils via the tone knobs..either a single coil for pure P90 tones (chime, clarity and depth...a thick single coil) or dual coil punch and thickness for killer jazz or pseudo 'bucker tones. I can get anything from Johnny A. cleans to thick Warren Haynes blues to near tele twang with this guitar. The fretwork and slim taper neck make the strings guide like 'butta'. Overall a killer Les Paul. The only glitch in the finish was a smear of the side stain on about two inches of the binding near the cutaway. I've always been a Fender guy, but this Gibby is now my one number axe, it just plays SO smooth and the array of tones from the H90s is very nice. The Iced Tea finish is very warm and eye catching, even with gold hardware that I'm not normal drawn too, this is a home run for Gibson. Oh, and it's light too...around 7.5 pounds, yet sustains for days.

Nice and light, plays well, great tone. Gibson, higher prices lower quality. I have other Gibsons with P-90 style pups and the pickup routing is tight and professional. This one looks like it was routed for humbuckers. I was going to send it back, but it sounds great. That's the only disappointment sloppy uneven routing.

This is a great guitar with all the sweetness and growl one needs to play rock, blues and some jazz ta-boot. This guitar was ready to play right out of the box, I was amazed. With this Classic Antique and my 50's Les Paul plain top I'm pleased to my kneez!
