I was torn between the Gibson L4A Rosewood and the Gibson J45 Rosewood. The L4A was $500 cheaper, but I was not crazy about the shape. I tried both guitars out at a guitar shop and they both played very well. However, the feel and the tone of the J45 was just too much to resist. I wanted to buy one direct from the factory – one that was never played so I ordered it from Musician’s Friend. I was a little disappointed when the guitar first arrived as the volume knob that sits just under the sound hole was hanging from its wire, dangling in the body of the guitar. I guess it came loose in shipping, but I would have expected that it could handle the trip. After all, I did spend over two grand for this guitar. I never called Gibson because I dropped the guitar off to have it set-up and they fixed the volume knob for free. Other than this issue, the guitar was perfect.

I have to say, I don’t regret putting out all that cash for this terrific guitar. I do wish that it had more than just a volume knob for the pickups – like bass and treble. But this is a small shortfall. The sound is spectacular both unplugged and plugged into an amp, and it looks awesome. I play in my church worship band and was playing a low end Ibanez. But now that I am using the J45, I have never sounded better –neither does the band. If you have the money to fork out for this baby, I would not wait another minute.

J45 Mahogany/The Best

While I have played many J45's I find the J45 mahogany to be the best all around guitar. The J45 rosewood is a tad too sweet for my taste. Mahogany speaks to each mode and color much better IMO. Like Doc Watson says...you need mahogany and spruce to be true to the touch. J45M beats a D-18 and the J45R beats a D-28 everytime in the taste test...lol They are hard to put away whenever you play...

Alright now I don't "technically" own this exact guitar. I have a Gibson 1952 J-45. I can say that the J-45 is one of the best acoustics out there. I have played the new one. Not like the vintage, but wow awesome guitar.

Simply the best acoustic I've ever owned or played. I've owned them all Martin, Gibson , Guild and Larrivee. This beat them all. I first tried a 45R in a large guitar store (you've all been there) I picked the J45r out of about fifty of the top guitar. Going back week after week to store I kept going back to the 45. Finally I bought one. I surprised myself, its not what I would of picked based on looks and reputation. When I was a kid Gibson made a lot of junk. I've had my J45r for about six years and I still haven't touched anything like it. The sound is great deep rich bass, crisp mids and a warm soft top end, maybe its just my old ears. I don't think you'll be disappointed but who knows. I hope this helps

This is the guitar that I have aspired to since I began playing. The workmanship is superb and the tone is exactly what you would expect from a Gibson instrument.
