The look of a well-loved, gracefully aged instrument. |
The Gibson Faded SG Special is an electric guitar that maintains the tradition of looks, functionality, and value for which the SG guitar is known. Under its attractive faded finish, the Faded Special SG is still the traditional SG, with mahogany body and neck, Tune-O-Matic/stopbar bridge, and alnico 490 pickups. The guitar's faded finish gives it the look of an electric that started its rockin' days in the '60s.
A Little SG History
In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that made the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist behind the original Les Paul did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to the end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

Ive had my faded brown SG for about 3 months,I do agree with others that the pick-ups do lack in color and tone but I have heard worse.I am a guitar luthier for two guitar stores in my town. Its my life, hobby and passion to play, build and work on guitars.(23 years of playing and building/fixing).The guitar is built well, neck is big, good finish on frets. hardware id give a 8 out of 10. Top nut is finished very well.guitar looks and plays like butter.I replaced the pick-ups with the SH2 and JB4 set by seymour duncan.(ordered from this web site) Sounds amazing!! The turners hold tune great and with a good set-up plays like heaven. All guitars are different and the feel of this guitar is something of personal preference.Try one out and see if you like it.I have a reissue of the 1960 gibson Les Paul and in comparision,,,,,,yea, its a little lacking in luster, but if it wasnt it would cost twice as much. If you want a Gibson for under a grand and you want a good quaility guitar that can last a life time you will feel happy with this investment. On some finishing notes the guitar is very light compared to most, balanced good with a leather strap.recomend strap locks on all guitars. Good luck on your search for "THE ONE".(if your like me you have many, lol.)Rock on!!!!

So, I just bought this guitar a few weeks ago, and I must tell you, I have already put some good millage on this thing! I simply can't stop playing it. I got it in the faded cherry finish, and I was lucky not to get one of those cheesy light red SGs, but a more so very dark red. I gave it a four in quality, because honestly, the pick ups are poor. However, what do you expect from buying a basically striped down Gibson? I bought this guitar knowing I'd have to put more money on it, which I have. I threw in a new bridge pick up;a Seymour Duncan Distortion. Let me tell you, this combo sings! I wanted this to sound metal but melodic at the same time, as I have a guitar with active EMGs and have the chug covered. This did the trick. Overall, if you want a sweet guitar that you want to experiment pick up changes with, this is one to do it! Also, if you appreciate a vintage look like me, you'll really praise the finish.

I went on a buying spree and bought a Les Paul Trad Pro and a Mesa Express 5-50.While the salesman was doing the paper work I picked up one of these. My problem with SG's has always been that thre neck heavy on a strap. This one was'nt at all.The store I bought it at had 5 or 6 of these so I picked out the one that was nicest.I also got a great deal, even better then the allready great price since I bought so much stuff. When I got this home I fell in love with this.It isnt as nice as my Paul but it has it's own thing going,it's just so much fun to play. After 40 years of playing I finally have a S.G.What a bargain.

I got this guitar recently, and I am blown away. The cutaways allow me to get right up there, and the neck and action give me blazing speed. And the sound is incredible. It's not perfect; it buzzes a little. But only a little. If you are looking for a good second or third guitar, this is your only choice.

Mine arrived in great shape--perfectly in tune--needed no bridge adjustments or anything like that.Sounds great. The only thing I would MAYBE change are the pickups. The stock ones are fine but could stand some fine tuning. And the thing is so light!Ive went from playing with Les Pauls to this guitar with my band and maybe I wont get scoliosis now! This guitar is a great value. It has that Gibson SG snarl for less money.Great guitar
