A Custom Shop rendition of a blast from the past.

The SG originally was intended as a Les Paul redesign and addressed what many considered the 2 main issues players had with the Les Paul: weight and upper fretboard access. Les Paul himself didn't like it so the Les Paul stuck to its original style and the new Les Paul design was renamed the SG Standard. Even though Les Paul didn't approve of it, countless rockers loved it and made it one of all-time hard rockin' favorites. This is the early '60s deluxe model.

Like all VOS (Vintage Original Spec) Series instruments, the SG Custom VOS is handcrafted for comfort and playability in the Gibson Custom Shop. The construction, neck profile, hardware, and electronics are period accurate, and a special nitrocellulose finish treatment gives it the patina of a gently aged vintage guitar. Includes Gibson Custom Shop case and certificate of authenticity.

I came home for thanksgiving break and this axe arrived at the frontdoor. I was amazed when I pulled it out of the box at how beautiful the case was, let alone the guitar itself. It's truly a work of art, down to the perfect black of the ebony fretboard. The action is absolutely perfect, and each fret is clear and crisp. The three pickups are beautiful and give this guy any sound you want, from crunchy distortion to clear, smoothe clean sounds. If you're someone who uses a lot of pick, you'll have to adjust the bridge when you get it because it comes low and there's not much space between the strings and pickups. This is an expensive guitar, but if you can afford it, go for it. you will not be disappointed!

What A Load!!

Gee. What a load. I have both this and the Epiphone G-400 Custom...same guitar but, you know.... This is by no means the absolute. But this guitar has given me more tuning trouble than I can bear. The real clincher? I like the Epi pickups better. Is that not believable. No. It's not. Somehow the Epi's are turning out....pretty good. The body on the Gibson is better quality and better contoured, and heavier. But, this only left to a deft-thick sound. It needs to be less stuffed sounding. Surprisingly the lighter Epiphone did just that. The pickups aren't crap if they sound as good as the $2500 USA made SG Custom. I did replace the bridge with a better no wire type Gotoh on the Epiphone.
