Back Close Angle

The Johnny A. Signature model electric guitar from the Gibson Custom Shop combines innovative design with vintage Gibson appointments to create a modern classic.

The revolutionary body is completely hollow with an arched and contoured outer surface and a flat inner back, resulting in a guitar that resonates more like a flattop than an archtop. The alluring face of this exquisite instrument is a beautifully figured solid AAA maple top. It rests atop an exclusive Gibson body style and size with back and rims carved from a single block of mahogany.

Johnny A. custom neck profile, and custom pearl fingerboard inlays combine with traditional Gibson features like multi-ply binding, gold hardware, and an ebony fretboard to create an instrument that captures the magic of Gibson's past while eagerly anticipating the future.

Got my Johnny A with a stop tail at the Gibson retail store in Nashville. The guitar is really a quality instrument. It's an excellent compliment to my CS-336. Like the CS, the Johnny A's sides and back are carved from a solid piece of Mahogany; but unlike the 336 it's carved completely out in the middle like a hollow-body and Gibson puts a mahogany block in the center. It's not as warm as the 336, but remains crisp through the mids and highs, and can really growl. Added block or solid, the Mahogany makes the tonal properties A+++.

The scale length gives the JA some really interesting characteristics, and the extra real estate has encouraged me to play just a bit outside my comfort zone - which is a great thing.

It's another really quality instrument from the folks at Gibson, and while not yet my #1 (gonna be hard to top the CS-336!), it has a really interesting place in my arsenal. For the $$, I believe that Gibson ought to roll with Grovers instead of the tulip tuners, but the tulips look fine and function well.

Great Guitar, and I've had some of the best. Another poster had the same problem as me--nut too tight on G and D string, but an easy fix. Bloody fantastic guitar. Sounds like heaven through anything, especially my Two-Rock. Power when ya' want it, smooth, damn near plays itself. truly, a wonderful instrument.

Gibson Custom Johnny A

On any website Johnny A looks like a Heritage Cherry Sunburst. When it arrived it looked different. But after plugging it in, color didn't matter as much. The inlays/headstock, too impressive, too easy to play, has a sound of its own with Brite-wires, you owe it to yourself to use the Gibson Humbuckers .010, Go ahead - give them a try. You may not go back to brites.

My finish on the back is finicky, mars easily, but buffs out clean.

The nut was tricky, was clamping the string G string making it difficult to tune. The luthier filed it down. Sweet.

The original bridge was bent forward at the factory and misaligned. The luthier installed a new bridge with ceramics, looks better, works better with the almighty Bigsby.

So now I have a Johnny-A+.

Want to order LP Supreme, for the Pickups and the wood. When nothing else is good enough.

Terrific, versitile guitar

Great sound, great playability, beautiful to look at. The only reason for the '9' on quality is that the nut was too tight, especially on the D and G strings: tuning resulted in a "twang" as the strings snapped to different tensions. My set up tech, fixed it as part of the setup I do on every new guitar I purchase, from here or anywhere else.

I've played it through Fender Deluxe RI and Vibrolux Custom (the new ones) (sort of a clean and dirty contrast between amps) and it sounds great. It record nicely using my SansAmp PSA1 and TC Electronics G-Force to ProTools (Mix 24 Plus system).

The JA does not duplicate anything else in the Gibson line: I've got and LP, and a 335 and it is different than either; also have a CS set neck strat, vintage Tele, and PRS 513: again, the JA is unique in its sounds.

Awesome Guitar

This guitar is a great hollow body. Not only does it look incredible, but it is a little smaller than your average hollow body, more around the size of a solid body. This does not, however, sacrifice tone at all.
