Faded Cherry Faded Cherry, Back Faded Cherry, Closeup Case, Closed Faded Cherry, Close Angle

The Gibson Custom Shop CS-356 Figured Top Electric Guitar is not only a versatile tone machine, it's also a musical dream come true.

Since the first semi-hollow ES-335 was released in 1958, Gibson has had the ultimate goal of producing a semi-hollow guitar whose back, center block, and rims would be carved from one piece of wood. In 2001, the Custom Shop realized that dream with the introduction of the CS-336, a guitar whose warm, woody sound and scaled-down body size are the perfect combination of comfort and tone.

With the introduction of the CS-356, a guitar with the same deep tone and comfortable feel but with an extended array of upscale appointments, the Custom Shop has created a big brother for the CS-336.

It features a luxurious AAA figured, book-matched maple top; single-piece solid mahogany back, sides, and center block; slim-taper, one-piece mahogany neck; glassy-smooth, 22-fret ebony fingerboard; rich pearl block inlays; '57 Classic humbuckers; and stopbar tailpiece. The neck and body are fully bound, and all hardware is gold finished for a classy and sophisticated appearance.

This is a great guitar and it ought to be at the price. My brother owns one and about the only thing I'd say negative about it is that the set up wasn't very good for a guitar that was this price. After a month or two he sent it home with me to do a proper setup. After a half hour or so it played like a dream. The guys at the custom shop could have spent another 15 minutes setting it up properly at this price.

Really fits well. Love the idea of a carved guitar

This is as good as they say. It is so beautiful and unique. I play the double bass and other orchestra stringed instruments. The bass has an ebony fingerboard and is also carved, each has a big influence over tone. For the 356 to have both features is significant in the electric guitar world. All sound starts with the acoustics first and then gets amplified. This guitar has the raw materials to deliver to the amp. It can get a warm and deep jazz sound, as well as Rock-a-billy, blues, and high gain rock. I wanted a guitar that had no limits in sound shaping and I believe this one is it. I have had it for over tow years now and it blows away anything else I have played.

Lefty Custom Shop 356

I absolutely Love this guitar. Any quality lefties are almost impossible to find. This being a Custom Shop, it truly sets it apart from the vast majority of other offerings. The body size is much smaller than the other similar body styles. The biggest surprise was the relatively light weight of the guitar. The balance is PERFECT !! The neck is great for smaller hands, and the ebony fretboard feels like silk. The flamed AAA top on mine ( black ) will cause envy among other guitarists. I did switch to some Dunlop strap locks though. Dropping it would cause nightmares. If you are looking for Les Paul tone, and the added benefit of tones more akin to blues, then your search is over!! This thing stands head and shoulders above anything else that Gibson offers!!!!!

This Guitar is amazing.... Play everthing from Led Zep to BB King. In simple terms "It plays like butter" The Cherry really shows the craftmanship of the wood. It might take the 1st place of my VOS 57 Les Paul.

A beautiful Custom Guitar but . . .

It’s a beautiful guitar with great action and versatile sound due to good construction and electronics. It’s a scaled-down ES 355 with a figured top, and no stereo or varitone. The one-piece sides, back, and center-block give it uniqueness and quality. Also ES 355s are unwieldy; so the smaller size is a good thing. Unless you’re as big as BB King you’ll look like you’re playing your daddy’s guitar when holding a full-sized ES.

It should have been available with varitone. It would have been more versatile and more reminiscent of a 355. Quality was rated 8 because on mine the gold plating on the Bixby is wearing through in places where it’s never touched. The inside surfaces of the F-holes are rough; they pull fuzz off the polish cloth when wiped down. Also, any sweat on your hands will cause the cherry finish to bleed onto the binding turning it pink. The guitar comes with a note saying Gibson purposely used these dyes because they are “more original” and that bleeding onto the binding can not be considered a manufacturing defect. Sorry, I don’t buy that.

The value’s a 7 because at the price with the Bixby, the bleeding finish, F-holes and, thin gold plating should not be issues.
