Combines Fender guitar know-how with Roland technology for a versatile and innovative guitar. |
You no longer need to choose between a virtual guitar and a real guitar. The Fender VG Stratocaster is both—everything you'd expect from a Fender Strat, and a whole lot more!
Lurking beneath its classic Strat exterior are 37 sounds based on Strat, Tele, humbucker Strat and acoustic, as well as 6 tunings, but the aesthetic and cosmetic of the Strat remains intact. Even better, the VG Stratocaster delivers level, balanced tone and volume across all these remarkable functions, so that you won't need to continually readjust amp settings with each change in guitar sound.
No unique hardware necessary to use the VG Strat guitar: no special 13-pin or USB cables, no power supply or input box. It plugs in and plays like any electric guitar. All you'll notice visually are 2 additional knobs on the VG Strat's pickguard, plus a small LED and an inconspicuous Roland® GK bridge pickup. The 2 additional knobs are a Mode Control knob and a Tuning Function knob.
The Mode Control Knob between a Virtual version of the Ash bodied Strat (for use of the tuning function), a virtual Telecaster, virtual 2-humbucker Strat, and an assortment of 5 acoustics, from Dreadnought to Resonator. The 5-way blade switch switches you between sounds in the modeling modes just like on a regular guitar.
Tune function rotary control lets you choose between Normal regular tuning, Drop D, Open G, DADGAD, Baritone/Low B, and 12 string. The tuning function does not work in Normal mode when circuit is bypassed. Tuning function is also relative if you tune down to E flat, all of these tunings will transpose down a half step. Since guitarists don't have to turn a single tuning key, a major benefit of all these instant tuning changes is that the string tension remains the same and the guitar itself feels the same.
Fender's VG Stratocaster is the result of a 10-year research and design partnership between Fender and music technology pioneer Roland Corporation. The VG's development followed a commitment to "The Complex Art of Keeping It Simple." Developers spent time and great effort working out intricate details so that you can just plug in and play. Their goal: a balance of usability and tech the more functionality added to an instrument, the more complex it becomes. Fender kept it pared down so it could really be used in a live setting. They stayed with Fender sounds Strat®, Tele®, Humbucking pickups and acoustics.
No unique hardware is necessary to use the VG Strat guitar: no special 13-pin or USB cables, no power supply or input box. It plugs in and plays like any electric guitar, and no phonebook sized manual is necessary it is built for 5 minute mastery, and is easy to use and understand.

Electronics Problems

I really loved this guitar when I first got it, but once the electronics went south, I have been very frustrated. After two trips to repair, Fender and the warranty people still have not been able to fix it. Basically, when selecting a mode other than straight strat, the signal drops out in the middle of playing/performing...not good. I've been without this guitar for almost 2 months for this last repair attempt. It's hard to appreciate a guitar that has spent so much time in the shop...

As a working solo musician, I am always trying to streamline my gear. I always wanted the Fender VG STRAT but just could'nt justify the price until now. I made the call and in 3 days I received my guitar just as I was leaving for a gig. I quickly unpacked the guitar and did a quick visual check and the left for the job. When I got there I set up and the tuned up the VG STRAT, plugged in and never put it down for the rest of the night! I did not touch my other strat or acoustic at all. I play all types of music and this guitar did it all.
I did all the acoustic songs with this guitar, and though it does'nt sound "exactly" acoustic it's pretty close when you dial it in right. This is one of the nicest if not THE nicest strats I've ever played.

VG Strat is Stellar!

I bought my VG Strat 18 months ago, and I've gigged with it. Initially I too found the battery consumption horrible, and later switched over to rechargeable NiMH batteries which makes a BiG difference! Overall I love the various tones and effects: I mostly use the drop D, 12-string and open G (for slide) tunings, and the virtual Tele and HB sounds. It's cool to have one guitar with many useful aspects that fit country, rock and folk music genres. Typically I plug the guitar into my Fender Super Champ for great sounds. I'm a Tele player, but this is one Strat I love to play. Cheers and Twangs! T-Bob

Outstanding combination Fender/Roland

I have gigged enough with my VG Strat.....so finally I can write an honest review. First of all, with a few turns of either Mode or Tune knobs I have eliminated 2 other guitars on stage. The Roland pickup is a great addition and best of all when engaged you don't have to worry about the annoying humm you get out of your stock single coil pickups. You get a better response with the stock single coils when the Roland pickup is not in use. I recommend a Commpressor/Sustain pedal to give the Roland pickup just a little of a lift. As for the batteries: I use NiMH rechargeable AA batteries. Fully charged they will last for an entire show. I have an extra set on standby just incase. To get your true sounds out of the Mode Control....I recommend any tube Fender amp. I have played through a Marshall, Line6 and Crate amps and I just can't get that pure Strat/Tele sound. Love the acoustic mode. This is the closest you are going to get from a standard electric guitar to sound like an acoustic without any extra gadgets. If you are in the market for one guitar with alot of extras, visit your local music store and take this baby for a test drive. You will find out it has a V8 that will give you 40 mpg. I recommend this Vg to an guitarist out there. Good Luck!

VG Strat Rocks!!
Posted by Steve Lockridge from Fort Smith, Arkansas on Feb 18, 2009

I have owned a lot of guitars over the past 25 years. Because I play a lot of different styles I've always had multiple guitars and most of them customized to get different tones. Well not anymore! The VG Strat seems like a bottomless well of tones. The acoustic models and 12-string tuning are absolutely incredible!! Dial over to the Baritone tuning and you can rock like Sevendust, Soil, and more. Before the hype gets too much for you, this is not the perfect guitar but then, that guitar doesn't exist. If I were going to record some guitar parts in a studio I would use the original instruments. The VG Strat does a great job modeling the other guitars but it's not quite the same. Live, you can't beat it - unless you enjoy dragging around 15 or 20 guitars to every gig. The VG Strat plays very smoothly which I don't find very often on a new guitar. The quality of this guitar is what you would expect from an American-made Strat. It came with a heavy-duty SKB TSA-Approved case, too. Overall, I am VERY PLEASED with the VG Strat.
