First Guitar I have bought that was not made in the USA. It was meant to be a present. Once I got it, I couldn't let it go. Almost on par with my '65 Jaguar. The Jag's pickups are superior. I did however buy two of them. One as a present.
Closer to Maroon

Like the guitar. Flashy but the color is not as purple as the online picture shows. It's more of a maroon - redish sparkle, which is a little more appealing to the guys. I agree that the finish on the neck feels kind of cheap. But overall, it is a nice guitar for MIJ. I think that all signature guitars should have a signature case or gig bag. This one came with none. Also, I didn't receive a booklet, product card, or registration. So, now I have to call and complain. I hate that!
Good Enough For J Mascis, Good Enough For Me.

This guitar is not only beautiful to the eye, but once the pick strums across the strings you know you're in heaven. Whether you want the clean bluesy sound or the crunchy indie rock sound, this guitar delivers.
My indie band had this at one time and we used it for a lot of shows. We had so many compliments for both sound and appearance.
So if you're wanting to look flashy AND kick out some killer riffs this IS the guitar you need.

LOOKS & FINISH
I fell in love with this guitar because i've always wanted a Jazzmaster and i liked the attention whore finish on this J Mascis edition. With that being said it's VERY difficult to judge the looks of this guitar from pictures because it looks so different in person depending on the lighting conditions. The purple is much deeper and can look almost black in weakly lit areas. It can also look fuschia at times. Under brighter lights and natural sunlight the purple really comes alive and looks beautiful. The sparkle is much more subdued than in the photos seen here and the fender site. The sparkle isn't as loud on the actual guitar and may not be as abrasive to alot of traditionalists that are put off my the color. The gold pickguard looks better in person too . It's got a brushed brass color to it and changes depending on the angle. It can look gold colored as well as silver , sometimes even cream. It compliments the purple well. I had planned on changing it but i think i'll keep it now
TONE
I'm getting great tone out of this thing and have been really pleased with the versatility it offers. I can get beautiful bright cleans as well as deep warm ,almost acoustic sounds. The guitar can be very bright by the way but it all depends on how you set the tone + amp setting . Nothing i would say was a problem. With distorion i can get deep fuzzy sounds , poppy high end stuff, Noisy grunge tone , just about anything i want so far. The Jazzmaster controls offer alot of options for tone and i'm still finding new things i can do.
NECK
The neck is my favorite. I was initially reluctant to order the guitar because i have small hands but once it came in and i got to play it my mind was at ease. The neck seems of average thickness to me so i haven't found it to be uncomfortable at all. The satin finish is awesome! This is the first guitar i've owned that had a satin finish and i don't think i'll play anything but satin for the rest of my life. It feels so much smoother and faster than the glossy necks . Not as sticky. It's like a pool cue gliding through a chalked hand. Very smooth. The jumbo frets are great and seem to fit perfectly with the 7.25 radius of the guitar. Some say the action is high on this guitar but it feels great to me and i have a light touch . I play mostly rhythm so the big frets in combination with the smaller radius makes it really playable. It doesn't take alot of pressure to get a good sound which makes chords and rhythm playing a breeze . I've also had no problems with bends or the guitar fretting out so don't be afraid of the 7.25 radius. It's VERY friendly.
MISC.
- The Adjust-o-matic bridge has been great so far. I haven't had any problems with the strings jumping out of thier saddles so far although my friend who plays harder than me did manage to get one knocked out of place. He strums closer to the bridge than i do.
- Guitar came set up nicely from the factory . No buzzing , no problems. Intonation has been fantastic even with heavy use of the tremelo.
- The weight of the guitar feels average to me. I thought the basswood would be lighter for some reason but thats a good thing. It feels very solid , looks and sounds beautiful. The offset body is great , Nothing feels better. Nothing on this guitar looks or feels cheap to me
- Basswood sounds great. Don't let anyone tell you different. I was suprised and how nice this guitar sounded unplugged. Louder than i expected , better acoustics. The sustain was better than expected too.
J Mascis knew what he was doing. This Jazzmaster rocks. Great guitar . Great Personality . Extremely versatile. Try it out. =)

I liked the guitar so much that after I bought one for my Granddaughter, I had to have one myself. Compares well with my '64 Jaguar and really pushes my '67 Bassman to the walls. It beats my new American Tele in all aspects.
