Great Pedal, Bad Design

So ive had this pedal for about 6 months now and one day i was playing and the string somehow slipped off of the spool, and let me tell you, it is a killer to replace. You need about 3 tools and alot of patience to fix it. If this pedal was ever lost or stolen, i would replace it with the Dunlop Volume Pedal, it has a much better mechanism and it is more durable.

This is the best volume pedal I've ever used - it's very durable, sturdy, and most importantly, it does its job well. I also have the Boss FV-500H, but I only use it in my practice rig and for expression. The EB takes up a lot of room on my board, but to me, a few square inches of real estate is not worth trading out something that's faithfully served me for more than 6 years with no issues whatsoever.

Ernie Ball 6166 Volume Petal

I'm setting up a new petalboard and bought a 6166 to control my volume. First test was dismal. All I got was a very weak signal thru my board. I tested the signal by testing the output from the first petal in the string. OK there. Next petal in chain was added and tested. OK there also. Next I added the volume petal. No dice. Weak signal. Bypass the volume petal and all other petals were OK. Ernie Ball Volume petal(Highly recommended) was sucking my signal to really low levels.
Short of it, I'm an Electrical Engineer so I disassembled the volume petal and did a check. When the volume was at Max volume setting the output resistance was only 33K Ohms. It should have been around 250K. Bingo. Thats the problem.
The fix was to loosen the allen screw that fastens the volume Pot to the string drive wheel. Then move the volume petal control to MINIMUM volume position, make sure the pot is fully clockwise (Use long nose pliers) and then re-tighten the allen screw. Presto, the output resistance as measured with an Ohm Meter now goes from 4 Ohms (Low volume) to 233k Ohm (Hi volume)
An observation I had with this volume control originally was that the moveable petal in the Low volume position was not touching the little rubber bumper at the front edge of the lower case. I thought that was weird to have a rubber bumper there and the petal was not comming close to it. This was caused by the improper setup at factory. Not only was the setup done wrong, there evidentially is no QA test at the end of the line to see if it works to spec. Come on Ernie Ball, don't let sloppy work with no testing get you bad reviews. We know you build stuff like a tank only we DO expect the tank to start right out of the box. A lot of people would not have the electrical skills to get this thing to work.
All works fine now. I'm glad I'm the one that got this one as repair was not to painful.

This pedal is the only volume pedal you will ever need. It actually eliminates noise at the end of your chain. If you manage to break that string, it is YOUR fault, and not the pedals. You are not supposed to put your full weight on it and being extremely harsh with it. It is a volume pedal with a STRING inside, not a wah pedal. The volume range is nice, but there could be more, if you're not careful it is basically an on and of switch. Overall I recommend this pedal. Buy it!

This thing is amazing
they should stop making all other
volume pedals cause this is just better than
all the rest
built solid, looks killer, works awesome
my foot is always on it
I play very modern worship so I'm always tweaking
my volume to follow the dynamics
Also I use it alot with delay
and some other stuff to do volume swells
and create really spacey sounds to fill
in soft parts of our songs
I could just play with it all
day long and never get bored
It's a little pricey
but it sure won't break
solid tank this is
Tuner out it pretty sweet to
Buy!!!!
there's no reason to not
