The tuners on the first EJ-160E I had buzzed profusely. The built in pick up has such a low output that when played through a P.A. or amp it has to be cranked and then buzzes/hums profusely. Once the body developed a crack Epiphone sent me a second EJ-160e. The tuners didn't buzz on this one but the pickup was still problematic, not to mention the tone of the guitar which is seriously lacking. A very bright mid-range/treble/plastic-y sound with no nuance. This is perhaps the most disappointing part. The guitar does not a) sound like The Beatles and b) does not sound very good in general (sadly). Additionally the finish is close to being beautiful but is way more orange then it appears in the pictures and certainly more orange then it's Gibson counterpart. I would highly recommend against this one, unless of course you want to buy mine off of me so I can get a Martin!

Great value for the money

Got this as I always wanted a Gibson Jumbo like George Paul and John played, but Gibson has become WAY too over-priced. Very well made, only had one sag about the size of a large pin head on the paint on the headstock but I had to look really hard to find it. Cosmetically it's excellent. The reviews about the cheapo tuners are right on the money. You do get some buzz at certain frequencies. Change them out for a set of real Klusons like the Gibson has and No Problem. Very good sounding guitar and with a few minor upgrades that have been mentioned by others like tuners, nut, etc., it is a GREAT guitar for the money. I like the strings that came on it so I got a few extra sets (Gibson L-5 Nickle Wound 11-52). Nut width is the same as the Gibson, which makes for easy finger picking. With a few minor improvements I'd put this up against the "real" thing from Gibson any day.

I just got my used Epiphone EJ 160. The 1st one I received was damaged in shipping but Musicians Friend sent me another one with NO hassles and it works great. I ditched the nickel flat wound strings that someone had put on it and put on some Phosphor Bronze strings and it sounds GREAT! Action a little high for me so some saddle adjustment is in order, but most players will like the action as is. Very pretty guitar and if you want one, you better hurry as I think they are going to get hard to find. I ditched the pickguard right away too...........sounds better and looks better. Highly recommend this guitar and GREAT support from Musicians Friend. You can get a human on the phone RIGHT AWAY! Good Job!

The Lennon Epi...

Hey, I bought this guitar a month or so ago.... even afetr reading all the reviews... When I got it, the tuning keys were buzzing like a bee hive when you would strum certain chords... I changed out the cheapy's for a set of nice grovers... then a couple frets popped up...... but I kept the faith... I took it to my mechanic, and he reset and polished the frets. AND now I have a great little guitar, and when you put some Martin Jazz strings on it, you get that Beatles sound. My observation...It is a good guitar.. when you get it... disregard the factory setup claim.. go to a good mechanic have it tuned up right and invest a couple buck and you will have a very nice playable guitar..

I like mine

bought mine through a local dealer because the reviews about uneven quality and set up were a red flag. Sounded great at first and then the first 3 strings started to go dead from the 8th-14 frets. Turns out the wood was drying in the arid Colorado climate and the plastic saddle was digging into the bridge. My tech replaced w/ a bone saddle and no problems since. Very playable with warm tone, clean sound when amped up. Long headstock makes for a tight fit into a standard gigbag.
