The Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy effects pedal presents a pure analog delay for musicians who covet thick sound from a thin wallet. EH melds heritage with select components to present the musician with up to 550ms of delay. Not a toy but a professional tool that bathes your axe with organic depth and dimension. The selectable chorus is a lush bonus.

The Memory Toy can be used in combination with other effects processors. Experiment with any combination to develop your own unique sound. The footswitch toggles between effect and true bypass modes.

Delay controls the delay time of the EHX Memory Toy guitar pedal and the range of delay time is from 30ms to 550ms. Turn the delay time clockwise to increase the delay amount. The Blend control allows you to vary the mix of direct and delayed signals from 100% dry when set counterclockwise to 100% wet at full clockwise. The effect pedal's feedback control increases the number of delay repeats or multiple echoes. At high settings the unit will begin to self-oscillate. Fairly high feedback with short delay settings produces a reverb type of effect. The Mod switch will enable a slow modulation on the delay time similar to the chorus modulation of the Deluxe Memory Man. The Status LED shows that the Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy is in effect mode. When the LED is off, the Memory Toy is in true bypass mode. Use the footswitch to toggle between the two modes.

I'm writing this review basically to confirm some of the other reports about the shoddy craftsmanship used while assembling this pedal. To clarify before you read further: i haven't actually used this pedal yet. I received it as a gift for Xmas, velcroed it into my pedalboard immediately, turned it on, and... nothing. I got a crackly fuzzy noise that was hardly what i'd call good tone. It sounded more like I had a faulty input jack or a crappy cable running the amp, but all my other pedals worked fine. i love EH products (i also run an lp1 and english muff'n on my board... never had problems with either), but after my troubles with this pedal, i figured that adding my input on its quality would help some people. mainly those trying to make a decision between this and a similar pedal. I'll update my review as soon as EH sends me a replacement.

Sweet sound

The good: Easy to use, nice features, sounds really sweet, and a great price. Well worth purchasing even though I have one not of concern.

The concern: My Memory Toy worked fine for a couple of months then spontaneously stopped working, lights came on but no effects processing occurred.

I contacted EHX and opened the pedal to remove the battery prior to shipping. The pedal has two circuit boards, with one attached to the other by eight pins fitted into sockets on the other board. I noticed that the top circuit board of the two in the pedal was loose, and had in fact separated from the main board.

Once I pushed the board pins back into the sockets on the main board the pedal started working again, it seems that the one board must easily come loose from the main board causing the problems.

I assume that the design that allows this to happen is the cause of the numerous similar issues I have heard of with this pedal, (some arriving DOA, etc.)

I added a rubber pad to keep the board in place from now on.

Upon Further Investigation

I wrote my last review concerning the quality of this pedal, or the lack of quality. I opened the case and looked inside to see if I could maybe see what was causing the feedback, modulation, and delay pots and switches from not working, only to notice that the board that handles these circuits was being held together with a tacking of silicon? On mine the silicon was busted and so were the 4 prongs that holds the board to the bottom board. Either someone else had done the same thing, and I got a second hand pedal, or it is very shoddy craftsmanship. I will go with the carbon copy upon return of this pedal.

After looking for several months for a good analog delay pedal, I was nearly convinced on the MXR Carbon Copy. I stopped in my favorite local guitar shop where I had tried out the pedal before, and the owner quickly showed me this brand new pedal. It has all the same controls as the Carbon Copy, although named differently, and the sound is a great, warm, analog tone. A month later, I still love this pedal. The tone is absolutely fantastic. It's perfect for Pink Floyd. I highly recommend this!
