The Crate V5 Class A combo amplifier features a single EL84 output tube producing 5 watts through a single 10" speaker. You won't find a tube circuit much simpler than that, and it gives you the sweet, pure cleans and warm, crunchy overdrive that can only come from tubes. Simple volume and tone/shape controls give you the widest range of sounds you can find on a practice/recording amplifier.

The Crate V5 guitar amp is based on a classic American all-tube circuit, delivering brilliant cleans and crunchy overdrive sounds. Low wattage through minimal EQ and a small speaker can equal awesome tone when dimmed. Giving our all for the evolution of all-tube tone, Crate's V-Series combos and stacks produce the sweet cleans and earthy distortion that can only come from tubes. Decent little amp

First off, right out of the box, you can get some decent little clean tones out of it at low volumes. However, crank the volume around 6 or 7 and the natural overdrive is very, lets say, "ice picky". By that I mean it has to much highs and not enough lows. However, I swapped the stock crate speaker out for an Eminence Delta Demon, and i'm stocked I did. The harsh highs are evened out, and it sound considerably better. After the speaker change I would give the sound quality a 4-4.5.

Out of the box the Crate V5 is an OK tube amp at lower volumes, it has a usable clean tone, hampered by the overly bright stock speaker and an "odd" tone control.

Replace the speaker and do some soldering and you can get it into the same category as a modded Valve Junior combo, but it has a bigger speaker, and costs less.

Excellent value and tone

When these went on sale, I immediately thought of running my BOSS GT-8 into two of these in stereo. I was not disappointed. Not only do these things sound great plugged straight in, or with a couple of pedals in front, but with a true stereo processor like a GT-8, GT-10, VOX Tonelab LE, you can get a MONSTER sound out of these little guys just by putting some distance in between them. If you're looking for just a simple practice amp, a Tube Screamer and maybe a modulation pedal and you can gig with this amp.

light and loud practice amp

How many 5W tube amps come with a 10 inch speaker, and a durable one at that? This thing can pump some bassy tones and screechy treble, which can help if you're rehursing but don't feel like dragging a stack or huge combo. the highs on this amp with the stock speaker and tube do get a little out of hand, but that's controlled by ddropping that tone knob. As for me, I don't see the need to replace the speaker, although I might get a better EL84 instead of the cheapy thrown in it. You can get nice deep cleans, if going for warmth cut that tone knob low. The drive's not bad either. This works good with pedals, tried it with the MM-X with the mids scooped and it's a similar sound to Randall. For the low cost, this amp is great to experiment with any genre. It's not the Valve Jr, but it's also Crate. Plus take a look at that list price. Good little amp.

Crate V5 tube amp. This is a very nice simple tube circuit. Great for blues or country. Well built import amp. A speaker swap might put this amp over the top, but it is very nice out of the box. Not for heavy guitar. well worth the $$$
