Great economic half stack

The Crate Flexweave 120 is a great economic halfstack. No, it's not a $2000 setup, but it's a good, versatile amp, great for the working person on a budget or starting out, and better than many amps costing up to $1000. I play it with an Epiphone G400.

I recommend reading the manuals, and trying it out full blast by yourself to dial it in- I tried during rehearsal, and just had to crank it up and go, giving me a mediocre tone. Going to the rehearsal space alone, I was able to dial it in very well.

Setup tips:

-Start by clearing the effects banks- play with them later (go through all the channels and each effects bank and MOVE the effects dials, resetting them to 0 each time). -Start with the tone and gain controls as the manual says, then adjust to your taste. With the tone controls low, there is low volume (tone cut). Try out and adjust all the channels. The regular overdrive will do quite well even for deat metal if you set it up well. -Try changing the cabinet resistance with the switch on the back- 16 ohms sounds different from 4 ohms. - The tuner works best with the clean channel at mid-volume.

Take some time with this amp and you'll be glad you did. With a little patience, you'll have a great sounding setup for a great price.

Not enough power

I'm a fan of crate - I've been playing guitar for 20-some odd years and I've had 2 and ONLY 2 amps before buying this one - both previous amps were crate 2-12 combos. I currently own a Crate 212 and it is also 120 watts but is WAY LOUDER than this guy.

This half stack claims to be 120 watts, but no one can ever hear it during live shows and I get a lot of complaints. I jack this thing up to 8 and it outputs less than my 212 at 4.

That's my only complaint - I think the tone is fine and the features are ok for the type of Rock I play.

Less Than Mediocre...

Its ok...just ok. There are lots of good and bad things about this amp.

GOOD: The reverb sounds like a nice clean hall, not too hissy or too boomy, just right for my tastes. The clean channel is crisp and, well, clean. No complaints here. The Drive channel works, and works well. not the best, but good. The chorus is probably, besides the reverb, the only good effect on this amp. The cab is amazing. Very clean. A little bassy, but thats what you get from a 4x12. The cab is also stereo (8 ohms). The built in tuner is a nice addition too.

BAD: Face it: the hi-gain channel is terrible. it just is. get a stomp box. Maybe i'm deaf, but the amp seems a little quiet for a solid-state half stack. Don't get me wrong: its very loud, especially on the drive and hi-gain channels, but i think a lot of the smaller Line 6 spider solid-state amps could out-blast this. The flanger is almost pointless, the phaser is just put in there to try to tick you off, and the delays are mediocre, but not useful. Another small issue: the first time i used this amp live without the footswitch, i was getting a bunch of effects i didn't ask for. reason: if the footswitch is not connected, it automatically pulls up the second efx bank, not the first as predicted. The amp doesn't use a normal detachable IEC power cable like most heads, mixers, and rack-mounted efx processors. It instead has a built-in power cable. Its a little annoying if you need to detach it. the tuner is hard to use...it seems inaccurate too.

The head is the problem here, not the cab. I'm planning on selling it and using the money to put together my own make-shift head with a Behringer V-Amp Pro, a sonic maximizer, and a power amp. No more crate heads for me.

If you want to buy your beginner guitarist friend a big amp, get this. if you want a good amp for yourself, get something else.
