A Decent Beginner Amp

I've got the older version of the FlexWave, the GT212. It doesn't have all the extras and effects except for the reverb, but aside from that, they're practically the same thing.

The clean channel is decent. It's really just a kind of standard, sterile clean sound, nothing to brag about. Course, it's better than nothing!

As far as the rhythm channel goes... It can handle anything from really light blues to ZZ Top to AC/DC. I rarely ever use it.

The solo channel is where this little beast shines. I run an ESP EC-50 with a Blackouts Metal pickup without the jumper on the back into a DigiTech RP250 (which I mainly use for volume control and the noise gate) into the amp. If you're looking for a pretty awesome metal tone for a low price, play this monster. I turn up the shape control all the way and leave the gain at about 4 and it sounds freakin' amazing. The highs can get kind of annoying, but this thing thunders when you turn it up.

The reverb is questionable. It sucks, in my opinion. I don't really use it because it more or less detracts from the sound.

Overall, for the guitarist who's a little bit experienced and is looking to play metal, this is a good starting amp. I'd probably never sell this thing.

NOT GOOD

I bought this amp about 2 years ago and have given it so many chances.... At first I thought I liked it but now it has a mind of its own when it comes to its sound and the built in effects...sometimes they work and sometimes they do not....sometimes they come on even when they are turned off... The tuner has never worked. And the pedal that came with it has a mind of its own too. I am very disappointed with this purchase to say the least. I would tell anyone to pay additional money and go with Marshall or at least a much higher rated product.

A perfectly acceptable generic amp

Just bought a used Flexwave 120/212. Features have already been discussed, so this is just a review. My amp came without casters, and the tuner does not work. Other than those two, I got this in almost New condition.

Clean channel: Very nice, and appears to have a lot of headroom. Nothing special to write home about, but this was the main reason I got this amp.

Distortion channel: Not bad, but not great. Gives a small variety of different levels of distortion based on how high or low the gain is set. Very acceptable sound, but kind of generic.

Super Distortion channel: Gives more boost, and the highs can be annoying. The Shape knob, if turned all the way to the left, makes the sound very muddy. At about mid-point, it's a lot clearer.

Effects: Digital reverb, delay, chorus/flanger: Blech. Pretty crummy, and they all sound digital. I don't plan on using these much as I personally don't like the tone they give off. Might use a bit of the reverb just for effect, but the Chorus/Delay are not that great.

Extras: There is a Send/Receive jack on the back of the amp, but you need to buy a Y chord. Have not tried the external speaker jack, nor do I plan to.

Why did I get this: I needed an amp that I could park at a friend's house and not have to worry about damage or abuse. And, this will work perfectly for my situation.

I would not get this amp again if I were looking for a new amp at home.

Crate Flexwave FW120

I bought this amp in December of 2008, and I like it a lot. Each of the three channels on this thing sound wonderful. The clean channel surprised me when I first used it because it had an almost acoustic sound. The distortion and heavy gain channels also sound really nice. This amp has a CD input port on the front, so if you have an auxiliary cable, you can play your iPod or CD player and play your guitar along with it. It also has a port on the back that allows you to hook the amp up to an expansion cabinet such as the Crate Flexwave FW412 cabs. The amp has an onboard tuner that works fairly well, but sometimes it can get a bit annoying with the flashing lights all the time. The footswitch that comes with this amp works very nicely. You can switch between the three channels with ease. Depending on if you have the clean button pressed in, the amp can remember up to two presets per channel, which is nice if songs call for reverb and distortion for one verse and then just distortion for the next verse. All-in-all this amp is great for the price. If you have an extra $100, then I'd recommend the Crate Flexwave FW120HS Half Stack.
