I've had this head for a little over a year and a half now. At first, I hated it because it's not a really good metal amp. The clean on this is great but, the dist doesn't have that extra push. That I wanted. I've been tweaking with it and I've been trying different things and if you want a good metal dist out of this thing get a bbe sonic maximizer and run it through the effects loop. Makes this thing sound soooo much heavyer. If you're looking for a good metal tube amp cheep, your not gonna find one. If you do tell me. But if your not wanting to spend alot of money and you want a decient amp then this is a pretty good choice.

CRATE BV TAKES HIGH OCTANE FUEL

I have the older version of this amp, basically the same thing. My guitar signal runs through a homemade pedal board featuring tuner, noise supressor, compression, wah wah, flanger and metal core (all Boss pedals). Its not overkill, its how you get the best out of the BV and other amps I used to play through as well. What I have is dead silence until I hit a note. I use the clean channel for crystal clean guitar in certain songs, then I step on the Metal Core and keep the gain at 9:00 (at 12:00 its unbelievably loud but my Crate 4X12's angled cab can handle it). Save that setting for the club!! If I want a warm, smooth overdrive/ distortion like Stevie Ray Vaughn or AC/DC or to simulate Eddie Van Halen's backing off on the guitar's volume (Ain't Talking 'Bout Love in the middle refrain part) I step on my Boss channel switch and there it is. You gotta experiment, tweak and eventually you'll find a killer tone from Aerosmith to Megadeth using your feet!!

I bought the slightly older version of this amp (bv120H and looking at the picture it is the same amp. specs, look, everything.) with two Peavy 4x12" cabs in January used, and when I let this thing warm up the bluesy tone it gives is incredible. The amp is defiantly not a heavy or dark amp but can give some good rock tones. With its own distortion is really not heavy but you can put a pedal into it too make up for that. Defiantly recommend for blues and rock players looking for a decently priced amp head.

An O.K. Tube Amp

I had an older model of this amp (The BV120), and I was less than impressed. Where is the warmth> It is far too bright and only the treble shines through the mix. It gets even worse if you're using a mediocre cabinet. This is a good tube amp for a beginner, but if you're playing local shows with this thing, you're greatly limiting your tone potential. The Peavey 6505 is only a little more... I don't see the point to this Crate being so expensive for what it's really worth.

I've never tried experimenting with various tube sets however I have heard here and elsewhere that it really does help find "that tone". I too was kinda disappointed with the amps gain section, but I remind me that TUBE AMPS NEED THE MASTER VOLUME CRANKED AND THE GAIN SET TO AC/DC ROCK OR VAN HALEN MELTDOWN. using the guitar's volume to back off as Eddie does so well then come roaring back in again. The clean channel is SO LOUD that an audible signal is heard even when turned all the way down! Kinda like a Marshall '59 100 watt lead plexi, patch cord that bright channel over to normal and you have Jimi's sweet soul in your amp (the Marshall I mean) Back to the BV-120, I have to turn the bass knob and mid all the way to 12 to get WARMTH. ATTENTION: I normally run through seven boss pedals, NOISE SURPRESSOR, COMPRESSOR are the two that tame this beast. BUY THIS AMP DESPITE MY NIT PICKING.
