The stunning Bugera V22 1x12 Tube Combo Amp not only exudes unbelievable sound, but this 22W amplifier also possesses modern flourishes capable of taking it to any corner of the musical landscape. Perfect for practice, home recording, or small club gigs, the Bugera V22 is a loud lad that channels its mojo from 2 EL84 power tubes. These give it the bratty, breakup-prone power amp compression—especially in the its triode mode—its 6L6GC-equipped siblings can only achieve at high volumes.

The Bugera V22 gives you everything that antique amps deliver—without the bloated price tags. Don't be fooled, though; the V22 tube amp packs a special feature that makes it much more than a tribute to the early days of guitar amplification. To explain, we must take a quick step back in time . . .

Before greasy juvenile delinquents hijacked the blues, guitar amps generally came in 2 species: those with triode (having 3 active electrodes) power valves and those with pentode (containing 5 active electrodes) power tubes. Triode valves, which came before pentodes, provide what a lot of guitarists describe as a "gentler" tone. Pentodes, on the other hand, are decidedly more "in-your-face." The Bugera V22 combo is built for power pentode tubes, but that doesn't mean you have to settle for a singular pentode personality. This Bugera amp includes a Mode switch for you to operate the power section as if it had triode tubes—at roughly 40 percent less power. So what'll it be today—old-school or oldest-school?

The sound of the Bugera V22 tube combo begins with a 2-channel (Clean and Lead) preamp. Plug into either the Bright or Normal inputs, then adjust the 3-band EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble) and Presence control to create a sound all your own. Its 3 12AX7 preamp tubes provide the V22 amp with a feast of fuzz. The dual EL84 valves in the power stage propel its terse cockney tone through a Bugera 12" speaker.

If you need to feed more speakers, the V22 amp's Impedance switch adjusts it to 4, 8 or 16 Ohms—which gives it compatibility with just about any speaker cabinet you can find. You also get reverb, but for utmost durability and sound, this classic effect is derived from a professional quality digital processor. The spring reverb found in antique amps sounded great, but they're delicate and expensive to repair. This modern touch on the V22 gives you a vintage sounding reverb sound that's every bit as beautiful, but a million times less breakable. And if all these features weren't enough, you also get an incredibly durable footswitch to select channels and engage the reverb without stopping mid-show.

Whether you're making a record, practicing, or paying your dues on the dive bar circuit, the Bugera V22 Tube Combo Amp complements your guitar-craft with the gold-standard tones of the past—today!

Small Wonder...

I’ve been searching the market for a while for a low/mid-power tube amp so I can retire my ‘64 Ampeg Rocket top-panel after 46 years of faithful service. Unfortunately I missed out on the Ampeg top-panel reissues (Jet/Super Jet) of a few years back, and since I no longer play out as often as I used to I couldn’t justify the initial expense of a Fender Hot Rod/Blues or Princeton/Deluxe Reverb RI, much less one of the new generation of boutique boxes; the Bugera V22 fills the bill nicely, at minimal cost. Having cut my musical teeth during that “Golden Age” when guitar sounds were transitioning from surf to British Invasion to classic rock - Fender/Ampeg to Vox to Marshall/Hiwatt, if you will - I can perhaps more fully appreciate the versatility and potential in this little amp than many of the younger beginner/intermediate players to whom it is most likely designed to appeal; that said, there are also certain design idiosyncracies that make it somewhat less of a “plug & play” deal than it would appear at first glance. First off, there are no less than four volume controls - clean, OD gain/volume, and master, in addition to a global mid-boost switch - and while this makes it possible to achieve a broad spectrum of tones through a balance of pre- and power-amp tube saturation (or lack of same), it’s also fairly easy to end up with some thin, raspy, unfocused sounds if you’re not careful; the tone controls - Bass, Mid, Treble, and Presence - also have a somewhat narrower operating range than many other amps, so you’ll need to check this out with the guitar(s) you intend to be using as some players may not have enough tonal variety (although, truth be told, the Bugera is no worse in this respect than some ‘50s-60s relics I’ve played). Second, the “normal” input is hotter than the “bright” input - a reversal of traditional roles to be sure, and the reason for which totally escapes me. With a decent A/B box, however, you could have on-the-fly access to four distinct tones for each setting of the pentode/triode switch; this latter feature is an unexpected touch in this price bracket, and a major contributor to the aforementioned tonal versatility. With all tone controls set at 12 o’clock, the triode setting evokes the classic Vox AC15/Marshall 18-watt “sweet & crunchy” sound in both clean and OD, further enhanced by the British-voiced stock speaker (even the model number - 12G70J8 - being reminiscent of Celestion nomenclature); pentode (my favorite) takes you well into early-60’s vintage American combo territory - albeit more Ampeg/Gibson than Fender, and very sensitive to changes in both picking and left-hand techniques (more dynamic than the vaunted 2X10” Vibrolux, IMO) - with a dose of Brit midrange EQ thrown in (again, attributable to the stock speaker). The digital reverb is fairly well-voiced, and while it’ll never be in the same league as my blackface Super Reverb’s tube-driven spring tank, it’ll get those Dick Dale/Ventures tones easily enough - better, in fact, than the solid-state, short-spring analog units built into most similarly (and higher) priced combos. In short, while this amp is highly usable as is, I really see it shining as an inexpensive platform for potential mods/upgrades; some good NOS tubes and a Jensen Alnico would turn it into a classic New York-style studio/club amp, for significantly less money than a fully-functional ‘60s Gemini I/II (most of those I’ve seen have blown trem and/or reverb circuits), with far greater flexibility - and I’m just waiting for Mercury to start producing a line of upgrade transformers. Highly recommended...

Hard to believe, but true to its' claims!

After a long and exhaustive search through the tube offerings of every amp company in the marketplace, I decided upon this Bugera V22. At first I was thinking of the 5 watt category, but upgraded to the 22 watt so I could use it on the gig as well as in my studio. Right out of the box, with my Telecaster plugged directly in with no effects, this amp immediately provided me with an exhilarating musical experience. Chimey harmonic overtones abound from this amp which had my brain coarsing with seratonin in a matter of seconds upon hearing the first chord! Honestly!

I am a jaded, experienced professional guitarist with over 4000 shows in my career, and so I hope you will understand that for me, gear rarely has lived up to the hype of its manufacturers. But in this case I can honestly say that this amp delivers all the promised tone, volume, cosmetics, and build quality that I hoped for. I can't believe it was so inexpensive. It blows away my Fender Blues Jr, my marshall 30 watt, and even my beloved mesa boogie sounds sparkle-deprived after a session with the v22.

Obviously, "made in China" explains the low price tag, but I cannot find anything on the amp that would lead me to think it was manufactured cheaply in any way. It is solid as a rock, with quality feel to the parts, it is certainly plenty for most small gigs and when miked, performs suprisingly well on a big stage with a loud drummer (is there any other kind?)

The one thing that caught my eye in a worrisome way is that all of its' electronic parts - tubes and all - are housed in a a sealed, one-space-sized rack unit that is then screwed into the cabinet. There are no tubes hanging down or exposed anywhere. So my worry is that it must get awfully hot inside that casing. I don't know how Bugera dealt with the heat issue, but so far I have not had any sudden shut-downs or problems of any kind. Keeping my fingers crossed there.

All in all I am delighted with my purchase. This amp holds its own against amps costing 5 times more! How is this possible? I don't know, but I sure am glad it is! Buy it if you are considering it! You will not be disappointed!

Bugera V22 review

I got the V22 because my Fender Super is too loud for most places and generally louder than the mains when it's barely on.

When I got the V22 home and out of the box the "hot" channel would work for a second then crackle and break down. Took it back and got another one (floor model) and it's worked fine. Tone and flex features like pentode/tetrode, mid-boost are awesome. Included foot switch make it a one stop shop. Lot of EQ and easy to dial in, in a tight rehersal. The control knob config takes a little figuring out as far as what controls what channel.

I had to ding it on the quality because of the "out of box" experience. Anytime that occurs will leave a lingering "hmmmm" when you think about Bugera's quality control.

Documentation was a little thin. Just expected more.

I was a little hesitant after hearing these amps are distributed by Behringer, but I went to test one out for myself and I was blown away. Bought one right there and then. Simply put, Bugera has made a product of very high quality. Everything from the build, down to the looks is 100% quality and class. The tones are stellar...it's not an overblown statement to compare the tone of the V-22 to amps costing thousands more. The tone is not bright, so don't expect Fender-like bell chime, but it's smooth and creamy without being muddy. I am extremely happy with my purchase.

I just got this amp today and let me tell ya, it's AMAZING. Awesome clean tones and very nice gritty OD. I love that the only real digital thing in this amp is the reverb; meaning you don't have to worry about this amp sounding like it's made of a board of fx functions. I think this amp is plenty loud seeing you'll have to mic your amp anyway when playing in large venues. My suggestion is, get this amp before Bugera realizes and jacks it's price up :P
