The Little Amp That Could

Fantastic little no-frills amp. Ideal for the blues or roots rocker. Very organic sounding tremolo. Tone knob is all you need. Full and deep reverb. Will get you through a small club gig provided your drummer isn't an over the top basher. Really shines as a recording amp.

Ampeg J12T Tremolo: Mega tone, cool blue package
Posted by Believer Now from Houston, Texas on May 27, 2007

I did a lot of research on small wattage amps and kept coming across glowing reviews of this Ampeg model, both in vintage and new versions. Bought it here, spent a little money to customize it and wound up with a monster amp.

Ampegs have a distinctive tone that fits nicely between the jangle of Fenders and the honk of British amps. This model had a good tone out of the box with the stock speaker, which overdrives nicely but cleans up pretty well when you back off. My Strat with Kinman pickups needs only a one-third crank of the amp's tone knob to get great sparkle.

I replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion Vintage Greenback and put in a set of Eurotubes and a Beam Blocker to disperse the highs. The results are amazing. This is an incredibly smooth amp that handles fingerstyle jazz like a 50s club amp, but open it up and it absolutely sings with harmonically-rich overdrive.

Don't be scared by the lack of controls: that's its strength. When you hear how pure a tone can be without bell and whistle circuitry to muck it up, you'll be a believer. Buy this amp and be amazed...

GREAT amp

Reviewer's Play Style: Blues, Classic Rock
This amp is fantastic. I got this amp from my cousin about six monthes ago and it is fantastic. I play in a blues, southern rock, classic rock (etc.) band and use this amp frequently. I also attend local open mic nights weekly. I use this amp on almost every occasion and am completely blown away by its simplicity and downright gorgeous tone. Sounds great cranked for a concert or for playing by myself in my room. Reverb and Tremelo sound great. While the tone is phenomenal the volume is what really sticks out. This is a fifteen watt tube amp and i play in a band with another guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and a pretty wild drummer. I've played on occasion at the open mics with two other guitarists. I can completely honestly say that I've never turned this amp up past three. It is the loudest damn thing I've ever heard. The only setback is that there is no built in overdrive, but for the kind of quality tone this amp provides, an overdrive pedal is no big deal (i use a Marshall Guv'nor through this amp-- excellent pedal by the way). AAAAAaaanyways... Amazing amp

Amazing tone Simple controls Basic effects (reverb, tremolo) More than band capable volume

What more could you ask for?

Great Little Amp

Just got the J12T as a backup to my Twin. So far I have been very pleased with it's thick tone. Played with a G&L legacy, it produces nicely balanced, sustained clean. The tone control --the only equalization! works great. It breaks up nicely when turned up to 5-6, and takes effects well. This is an ideal rehearsal, club-gig amp.

Sweet jazz amp

I play jazz standards and mostly use my guild x150 w/chrome strings. I use this amp for practice and couldnt be happier with it. I do think it is a little pricey but I would be tempted to buy another if I lost this one. Warm, very gratifying sound for the more bass oriented tone that jazz players tend toward. I just played it in the store and fell in love.
