I have played a CY118 for about 7 years. The wonderful thing about the instrument is that it communicates with you. You can feel the vibration of the strings in the resonance of the guitar the way I have never felt previously. There may be better guitars available, but I cannot imagine how they could be much better than the Alvarez CY118. I am not a purist and the fact that this instrument is a Yairi built in Japan does not affect its soul.

CY118 - Excellent craftmanship, outstanding sound

I purchased a CY118 in 1996. I played every classical guitar in the Washington DC metro area between $350 and $4000. Found the sweetest CY118 in a small shop. Then played two others at the big dealers in Wheaton, MD and Springfield, VA. Also nice, but I took the first one. My friend, a professional classical guitarist and teacher, tried it and refused to give it back for hours. He was grinning the whole time, and so was I. Played by someone who actually knows how, it sounded incredible. Even in my faltering hands (I'm good, but no seasoned pro), it sounds fantastic. The fingerboard and neck are absolutely true, and it stays in tune for weeks at a time (even when transported through climactic extremes). This is one loud classical, bright but not brassy or twangy. The tone is pure, resonant, and sweet. After 12 years it only sounds better.

Alvarez Yairi CY118 Classical Guitar

Reviewer's Background: Serious student of Classical guitar

I purchased my Alvarez Yairi CY118 in April 2007. I have been playing classical guitar as a serious student since 2000 and also own a Hose Ramirez R1 (also a fine instrument). I mainly play for my own enjoyment at home, but have used it in nursing homes and at church for guitar and guitar/vocal solo work.

The out-of-box quality of the CY118 amazed me. Generally, the workmanship was superb and the guitar was visually stunning. I replaced the factory strings, with Savarez Corum Alliance hard tension strings; some of the best available today. The tone is powerful, yet sweet.

I wish the coral rosewood back and sides were solid (that's the reason for a 9 rating on features instead of 10 under features. For the price, this guitar is a tremendous deal. I have played many much more expensive guitars (e.g. $4,000-5,500) which couldn't, in my opinion, even come close to the CY118.

For me, this guitar is an investment of a lifetime.
