Rectifier in a pedal. Really.

This is an analog amp simulator - not a distortion pedal in the traditional sense. The best use of it is to run into a PA or direct for recording. If you do this, it will amaze you. If you run into an amp - even into the loop, you'll have a cabinet simulator in the pedal and then a cabinet. It's OK, but not as good as it sounds direct. My set up is Schecter C7 -> Ibanez Weeping Demon -> Cali Sound -> Hardwire Stereo Chorus -> Hardwire Delay -> Roland Stereo volume pedal -> PA/direct. I now have a pedal board that is better than any amps I've played and I've had a lot.

This pedal is designed to generate a high-gain signal right out of the box. With Gain at minimal, you're already in preamp-style, High-Gain territory. This is not a BAD thing .... for what it produces, the sounds are pretty good. But, if you're wanting a stomp with a good range of tone shaping/sculpting and versatile gain staging, then I'd avoid this particular pedal. As far as the "California" thing ... does it sound like a "Recto" ? Well, that's up to your ears.
